Feeling a little let down now that Halloween’s over? Exhausted after the last midterm push? Then spend a cozy afternoon satisfying your fall apple-picking nostalgia with this so-easy-you-can-do-it-in-your-dorm-room recipe for everyone’s favorite fall treat: candy apples.
Ingredients:
–bags upon bags of uneaten, underappreciated candy (chocolate bars, caramels, and toffees are particularly useful)
–3-4 Granny Smith apples (smuggled, over a series of days, from the dining hall)
–a baking sheet
–parchment paper
–2-3 tablespoons of milk
Try to use candy that will be easily meltable in the microwave. Caramels will work best for the classic caramel apple, but other trick-or-treating (or, more realistically, Target sale) staples such as mini chocolate bars or Tootsie Rolls will suffice. Or get gourmet if you’d like—Ghirardelli chocolate squares, Lindt truffles, or even Nutella could make for a tantalizing base.
To make the liquid base, heat the desired chocolate or toffee-based candy in the microwave for one to two minutes. Feel free to add a little milk to the concoction to form a thicker base. Remember to take the wrappers off, and always keep watch so things don’t explode!
Align the apples on the baking sheet on top of the parchment paper. Drizzle the melted candy liquid over the apples. Let cool. On top of the apples, sprinkle M&M’s, candy corn, chocolate chips, peanuts, or whatever else your candy-loving taste buds crave, and you’ll be left with a crisp, delicious way to savor that sweet taste of fall.
