Basketball Roundup

The basketball preseason has seen both the men and women develop well and show promise for a strong upcoming season.

The men played a tournament this weekend, competing against CS Monterey Bay and Azusa Pacific University. Travis Bray ’01 has led the Hens in scoring with 14 points per game, and Jeremiah Martin ’01 and Tad Dewalt ’01 have both contributed to the offense, averaging eleven and ten points respectively. Although he has been struggling shooting from the field (32%), Martin has still been an impact player for the Sagehens on offense.

Against Azusa, after leading by 3 at the half, the Hens were outscored by 24 points in the second period to lose by a margin of 21. Their contest against Monterey Bay was a different story. The Sagehens dominated the entire game, holding Monterey to 14 points in the first half and winning 59-35.

The women have had far less luck, understandably, playing without three starters that are studying abroad: Maya Jones ’01, Sojourner Howe ’01 and Meghan Gould ’01. With their return the women’s luck should change.

One bright spot so far this season for the Hens has been freshman sensation Gre’Juana "G" Dennis ’03 who has led the team in scoring with eleven points per game and averaged 34 minutes per game. Unfortunately the Lady Sagehens did not have quite enough firepower to hold up in the Azusa tournament. They accrued two losses by an average margin of 22 points. With the additions of a true point guard and two solid scorers, the Hens will have a much stronger squad second semester.
