Protestors Have Beef With WTO

The World Trade Organization (WTO) concludes its meetings in Seattle today hopefully having achieved some measure of closure. Bill Clinton, speaking on Tuesday, alienated a good number of the delegates at the convention by voicing his strong support for environmental and labor regulations for all WTO members. He proposed to levy sanctions on all nations that did not comply with these requirements. This angered many of the delegates from the poorer, "developing" countries, of which there are more than 100 in the 135 nation World Trade Organization. [con't]

Pave Paradise? Not Here, Please

With the construction of the Smith Campus Center, Pomona College made a decision which they deemed important: to preserve the integrity of Pomona’s physical structure and architecture. Because of this decision, students are able to walk straight along the axis from Smiley to Mason Hall. Also, the fake-wood concrete mold which is used in many Pomona buildings has been employed again for the Smith Center’s outer walls. However, despite efforts for the contrary effect, often Pomona neglects to preserve its finer, quainter architectural points during dorm renovations. [con't]

Error Mystifies Author of Article

Thank you for publishing my article on the status of Environmental Studies in the most recent edition of TSL. The article was published largely verbatim as I submitted it, but there is one deviation that I find troubling. That deviation is the addition of a first name for Professor Hazlett of the Pomona Geology Dept. that could be considered pejorative. That name did not appear in the text that was submitted (it contained no first name for Prof. Hazlett at all), and must have been added during the editing process. The addition of any material to an opinion piece without the explicit permission of the author is an egregious breach of journalistic ethics. I was not asked for, nor would I have given permission for such a change. I believe that a clarification is due as to why or how the text was changed (and an apology to Prof. Hazlett might also be in order).

Sincerely,

Gene S. Fowler

We’re Just Not Very Funny, Haha!

In reading TSL over the course of the semester, the one area that seems deficient is its humor. Take the security brief subtitles as an example. It seems to me that you could take a lesson from The Studen Alternative. It’s hilarious every week, and surely if you asked them to collaborate you could work something out?

Sincerely,

We Have the Means for Secession

Secession from the City of Claremont is an achievable goal and will be of benefit to the College Community. All that we need is the will to pull away.

We would have to make extra expenditures such as adding one or two certified police officers to Campus Security or paying to maintain the public roads such as College(the schools already pay for maintenance on all streets with the plaques on them announcing private property). Water, at least water at Pomona, comes from wells and not the City. Fire protection is provided by Los Angeles County, that wouldn’t change. With the financial assets of the 5 Colleges secession would cause these relatively small charges.

By forming our own community we could institute our own laws to meet student needs. Make a noise ordinance that sets a maximum decibel limit on music so when residents of Claremont complain to our police the most they could make us do is to turn it down until it reaches that volume. If continued complaints arrive the police would not be able to shut the party down (or even turn the volume down). The hypocrites of Claremont who want to save the "natural" environment of the Bernard Field Station (what do they think their homes and big lawns were built upon?) could not interfere in school affairs. The students and administration would be the only ones to make the decision on the fate of the BFS.

Secession is feasible, and preferable.

Sincerely,

The College Secessionists
