Thrilling Overtime Win Ends Great Season

By Nick Grudin

Sports Associate

In this tumultuous world full of suffering and pain, where life, in its bleaker moments, seems to lose any type of meaning whatsoever, 2000 screaming fans were offered a fleeting moment where those larger dilemmas in life paled in comparison to the events taking place at Claremont McKenna’s Zinda Field. It took an overtime period to decide the outcome of the game between the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Stags, but the Hens prevailed 24-21, to beat the Stags for the fifth straight year. Unfortunately for the Stags and their fans, they will probably regress into depression once again while the Sagehens and their faithful following will enjoy yet another year of celebration at CMS’s expense. H2O Polo Suffers Tough Losses to D-I Teams

By Derek Walters

Staff Writer

Around this time last season, the Pomona-Pitzer Men’s Water Polo team (11-15 overall, 2-4 SCIAC) accomplished something it hadn’t in eighteen years.

"Not so much myself, but several of the guys had to endure a winless streak against a bitter rival," said David Ratner ’01. "When we finally beat CMS last year, those eighteen years of suffering were erased from our collective Sagehen memories." [con't]

Meyered On Sports

The Rose-Gray Fiasco

Doug Meyer

Often enough society’s bosses declare themselves ill-served by their media employees: more often they blame the spectators for the common, almost bestial manner in which they indulge in the media’s delights... There is no place left where people can discuss the realities which concern them, because they can never lastingly free themselves from the crushing presence of media discourse and the various forces organized to relay it... Guy Debord, Comments on the Society of the Spectacle

After the dust has settled, the punditocracy (self-appointed as our sports media critics) has stopped spilling ink in our national newspapers’ sports sections, and the irate fans ceased their letter-writing campaigns, what now remains of the Pete Rose-Jim Gray encounter? Rose is still the most conspicuous former baseball player (still living, that is) who is currently not enshrined in Cooperstown. Nothing new there. [con't]

Volleyball Swept by Cal Lutheran

By Erin McCarville

Sports Writer

The Pomona-Pitzer Women’s Volleyball team closed their 1999 season with a disappointing loss to the powerful Cal Lutheran Regals on Thursday, November 4. The Regals dominated the Hens sweeping 15-6, 15-11, 15-3, but valiant competition was offered by the Sagehens in the second game as they rallied to score 11 points. Although they struggled defensively against the strong Cal Lutheran hitters, the Sagehens did have some strong offensive performances from outside hitter Colleen Chrisco ‘03, Allison Rindlaub ‘02, and specifically Samantha Hauff ‘01 who scored an amazing .700 attack percentage with seven kills.

The Sagehen team wasn’t particularly disappointed with their loss as they entered the game without high expectations. [con't]
