![]() Town Unfairly Targets CollegesThe advertisements for Claremont McKennas Monte Carlo night, stating that "The cops wont end this one early," echo growing student frustration and anger toward the town of Claremont, both toward its police and its residents. This newly growing discontent runs deeper than sentiments that the town is unable to cater to college students. It has grown because of increasing police involvement on campus (such as a recent incident in which a police officer pulled a gun on a freshman who playfully "borrowed" a golf cart, and the high profile efforts by Claremont residents and the Claremont Police Department to shut down Harwood Halloween), and because CPD and town officials have proven that they would rather save their own hide than serve justice in the Irvin Landrum, Jr. case. Opinion Overlooks ASPC EffortEditor: Jon Vanascos Opinions article in last weeks TSL ("Committee, Administration lagued With Inefficiency") raised some legitimate issues about how we got into this mess with the Smith Campus Center. However, he went beyond discussion of the SCC Task Force to suggest that student committees in general, and the ASPC Senate in particular, are composed mainly of tools of the administration, "political insiders" who lack the ability to effectively represent the "reformists" of the student body, not to mention the average student. Landrum Inquiry Must ContinueEditor: The Cultural Studies Student Organization sent the following letter to the Claremont Mayor Karen Rosenthal, City Manager Glen Soudhard, and Police Chief Robert Moody. We submit this also as a letter to the editor: We are writing as graduate students of the Claremont Graduate University to insist that further investigation be conducted into the January 1999 shooting of Irvin Landrum, Jr. An integral part of the cultural studies project is to create a classroom environment and academic approach capable of meeting the demands of an increasingly diverse and global society. CCLA Explains Harwood MistakesEditor: Many rumors have been circulating concerning last Saturdays Harwood Halloween. Let us take this opportunity to clear up any confusion and answer any questions about this event. First, and foremost, the event was shut down by the Claremont Police Department in response to noise complaints from the community. This act was in accordance with CPDs Disturbance Response procedure. The officers from CPD were very understanding of the event and lenient throughout the evening. [con't]
Senate Addresses SCC CriticismsEditor: It seems that there is a sense of dissatisfaction among students regarding the manner in which issues surrounding the Smith Campus Center are being addressed, specifically, the recently formed task force. Several items that ran in last weeks TSL expressed sentiments to this effect. Some points of contention raised included a suggestion that the student committee members would represent only themselves, and that the outcome of the committees work would be nothing more than some inconsequential changes made in an effort to placate students. Admin Fails to Satisfy Student NeedsEditor: It is difficult for me to be a satisfied member of an institution which exhibits such an incredible display of inefficiency in addressing the concerns of its members. We have seen many failures so far this semester by campus decision-makers to fix problems which negatively affect campus environment and undermine student passions. They are simply not doing their job. [con't]
