By Nick Grudin

The Pomona-Pitzer football team will be commanding the athletic spotlight this weekend hosting the Puget Sound Loggers for the 1999 Homecoming game. Coming off a 33-12 victory over the Whittier Poets in which the Sagehens spoiled the Poets’ own homecoming, an injury-plagued Pomona-Pitzer squad hopes to maintain their momentum against a potent Puget Sound offense. Meyered On Sports

Dougey on Rugby

Memorandum- To my dear, understanding, and admittedly-hypothetical readership: those of you who perhaps feel debased and emptied by my exclusion of a relevant quotation have to understand that my library, while unusually well-endowed and endlessly versatile in most respects, is most impoverished when it comes to the thematic content of this piece. Convention is meant to be flaunted, anyway, you infatuated groupies....

The rugby agglomeration that is constituted by our prestigious, unique, oh-so- complementary five colleges seems to be operating on a contradiction in terms. On the one hand, the assembled punters are not so squeamish that they would so much as bat an eyelash when confronted with the tittilatingly raunchy revelation that they’ve been know to coerce their rookies into drinking out of a Nixon-administration "vintage" cleat. Volleyball Hopes to Finish Strong

By Erin McCarville

Sports Writer

The Pomona-Pitzer Women’s Volleyball Team has struggled the past two weeks, losing four of their last five matches. The Sagehens experienced back-to-back losses against Grinnell on October 18 and Whittier on October 19, but both matches proved to be exciting, close competitions. The Sagehens rallied after a first game loss to beat Grinnell 15-0 and push the match to four games (15-12, 0-15, 15-10, 15-8). The following day against Whittier, the Sagehens challenged the competition in five close games (11-15, 15-6, 4-15, 15-9, 16-14) only to be edged out by the strong Whittier offense. The Sagehen defense struggled in both games against Whittier and Grinnell’s strong outside hitters and large offense. [con't]

Two disappointing losses made for an acerbic ending to an otherwise outstanding week for the Pomona-Pitzer men’s water polo team.

On Friday, October 15th, the Sagehens (9-11 overall, 0-2 in SCIAC) took on Chapman University in their first match of the Claremont Convergence. The Convergence, held annually at CMC’s Axelrood Pool and Pomona’s Haldeman Pool, showcases teams from around the nation. This year the Invitational boasted several nationally ranked schools, including Harvard University. [con't]

Men’s Soccer Defeats La Verne, Aims for SCIAC Title

By Neel Garlapati

Sports Associate

"Now serving number …" quipped the La Verne athletic trainer at the end of Wednesday’s game as the line of La Verne players grew ever longer, after the Hens had left the shorthanded La Verne team physically worn out.

The Hens used their superior speed throughout the game to push the ball upfield and keep the ball away from goalie Nick Zabriske ’02, who had to contend with only six shots over the course of the game. The win was the fourth in a row for the Hens and the sixth in seven games, a streak that started with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over SCIAC powerhouse Cal Lutheran. After starting the season at 5-4-1, the Hens have rebounded the push their record to 11-5-1 (8-2-1 SCIAC). [con't]

Women’s Soccer Triumphs Over Undefeated Cal Lu

By Jey Cho

Sports Editor

The Pomona-Pitzer women’s soccer team has transformed their season from what first appeared to be a disappointing effort and can finish the season at .500 in SCIAC play with a win today at CMS.

Following their 4-0 loss to CMS in early October, the Sagehens have come together as a team in all facets of the game. Starting with a 1-0 win over Redlands, the team scored goals in six consecutive games, a stretch during which the Hens won four consecutive SCIAC games. Anna Wolbach ’00 scored the game winner against Redlands on a breakaway in which she split the defense and faked out the goalie.
