Smith Center Committee Is A Farce

Editor:

The idea that a committee of students is going to have any effect on improving the Smith Campus Center is ludicrous. There is absolutely no need for a committee in this scenario. We attend a school of 1400 students. "Direct democracy" can work here. If the administration truly wanted a picture of what needs to be improved about the Smith Campus Center, they would sit in the dining halls and ask students or pass out surveys.

Instead, a small number of students will speak for the whole. And no matter how well intentioned these individuals might be, they can not convey student sentiment as well as could all interested students. Representatives always begin with the intention of representing a population. But when was the last time an ASPC senator, or CCLA member, or committtee member of any kind asked for your suggestion.

In the end, the committee will serve the following purpose: small changes will be made that will appease individuals on the committee, and major, glaring flaws (that need no committee to point out) will remain. And the administration will point to the changes that were made "at the suggestion of students" to demonstrate that they are looking out for student interests. And no one will object, because after all, a student committee made the suggestions, and decisions made by committee make everyone feel good and warm inside because they’re so progressive and inclusive and everyone gets a voice. Do any of you believe that that voice will tell the administration about any flaws that they don’t already know about? I encourage everyone to continue voicing their opinions about the Smith Campus Center. Don’t assume the committee will solve its problems.

Sincerely,

Conor Friedersdorf ‘02
