Chaos Counteracts Formulaic Existence

By Peter Cook

Opinions Associate

Chaos is a necessary component of a balanced life. However, most people fail to recognize the importance of disorder; indeed, most people spend the majority of their lives promoting and glorifying (at least consciously) the orderly. Right about now, you might believe me to be espousing anarchy, but I am no anarchist. Chaos is not the goal; it is merely desirable as a balancing force to the stringent order of humanity.

Allow me to explain. Around twenty thousand years ago, in the fertile crescent, humans adopted agriculture, settled down, and set about shaping their environment, on an enormous scale, to fit their needs and desires. [con't]

Public Policy Should Defy Political Ideology

By Will Hawkins

Staff Writer

Many people derive great satisfaction from calling themselves either a liberal or a conservative. If you’re a liberal, you probably get a warm, fuzzy feeling from thinking that government can solve a myriad of social problems. If you’re a conservative, you probably are sure that all the world’s problems would be solved if the government would stop meddling in people’s economic lives.

If we take a step back from these reactionary positions, we can probably see that both economic and personal freedom are essential to human progress and required by a sense of justice. [con't]

New Posting Policy Violates Freedom of Speech

By Jonathan Vanasco

Arts & Features Editor

The new five-college posting policy is absolutely ridiculous. It’s the most blatant form of prior restraint I have ever seen, and if it ever makes it to court, I can see a judge ruling on it without even hearing anyone speak. It is simply wrong to require people to clear things through the Bureau of the Censor before they can post or disseminate materials. It does not matter how little restraint is enforced, and what is or is not censored. The mechanism is there, and it is ripe for abuse. [con't]
