I Need to Get Out of This Place

Gay Paree. I remember that cappuccino on the West Bank, reading A Farwell to Arms while French (get it?) kissing a mademoiselle and smoking a cigarette. I had woken that morning and broken my fast with a baguette and some fine, aged cheese. I used a pay public toilet to –how do you say–merdé. But then the registrar called and said, "Nuts up, bitch. YOU’RE spending another semester in Claremont."

According to the section of Pomona’s web site which discusses its study abroad program, "Pomona College has long embraced the philosophy that the cultural awareness fostered through foreign study is an integral part of a liberal arts education." However, a walk through Clark I this week belies that statement. [con't]

Editor’s Complaint Misdirected

Editor:

This letter is in response to last week’s editorial entitled "A Story about a Saturday Night," in which Editor Patrick Resing was rightly critical of a racist situation which he witnessed at "The 70s Party" a few weekends ago. I need, however, to amend his statement because in the process of persecuting racism he made completely unfounded generalizations about a group of students at Pomona College — the Kappa Delta fraternity members who threw the party. Vegan Expands on Veal Complaints

Editor:

Peter Cook argues against the grisly conditions to which we subject baby cows destined to become veal, and he rightly claims that the best way to put an end to this tragedy is to avoid eating the rendered flesh of these animals. (Baby Cows: Meat is Murder, Veal is Torture; Oct 8) However, he neglects a critical point: veal calves are often the unwanted male children of dairy cows! Because they cannot produce milk, and because their flesh is unsuitable for standard beef production, they are tortured until they become sufficiently anemic and muscle-deformed that they can be sold as veal. Everyone Needs to Study Abroad

Editor:

This is a letter to the Pomona College Administration.

Pomona College prides itself in its academic atmosphere, positive social atmosphere, and the opportunities provided that greatly enhance one’s college career and subsequently their whole lives. Pomona College, as an institution that touts itself as a champion of the liberal arts ethos encourages her students to "live life" and "explore new avenues." [con't]

Cameras Could Solve Questions

Editor:

The recent events across the Claremont Colleges in memory of Irvin Landrum, Jr., have demonstrated a severe lack of trust in our police force.

They stand accused in the court of public opinion of murdering an innocent man, with racial bias as motive. [con't]

Missile Testing Necessary for US

Editor:

Last week’s editorial entitled "Symbolic Hostility as Bad as Violence" misleads readers concerning the missile testing conducted on Saturday October 2. The Minuteman (or ICBM) missile that was launched was unarmed (and therefore not nuclear) and was intercepted by a new kind of missile-killer called an Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle. This is not even a test of our missiles, but rather a test of a prototype antimissile defense system that (since successful in destroying the Minuteman) may extend research and development for the National Missile Defense program.
