Peter Cook argues against the grisly conditions to which we subject baby cows destined to become veal, and he rightly claims that the best way to put an end to this tragedy is to avoid eating the rendered flesh of these animals. (Baby Cows: Meat is Murder, Veal is Torture; Oct 8) However, he neglects a critical point: veal calves are often the unwanted male children of dairy cows! Because they cannot produce milk, and because their flesh is unsuitable for standard beef production, they are tortured until they become sufficiently anemic and muscle-deformed that they can be sold as veal.

In addition to avoiding veal flesh itself, anyone who sincerely wishes to alleviate the suffering of these innocent creatures should immediately stop consuming dairy products.
