The Drug War Targets Marginalized Groups, Not Affluent Whites

By Chris Bissell

Staff Writer

In the past three weeks, I saw two great (read: extremely visible) clouds of smoke. In the first instance, I was at Irvine Meadows. I was standing on a lawn and below me lay ten thousand seats packed with screaming fans and one concert stage, upon which was Phish. The opening chord had just been struck, and the sweet sounds were wafting over the audience. Sweet sounds weren’t the only thing wafting, though. [con't]

Even Bad Art Warrants Consideration

"Art isn’t easy/Any way you look at it"–Stephen Sondheim, Sunday in the Park with George

The recent controversy over the Brooklyn Museum exhibit "Sensation," which contains the work of several upsetting artists, proves this quote unfortunately true. Chris Ofili, an African painter, contends that his mixing of cow dung, porn, and the Virgin Mary is not really that offensive. Some Nigerian tribes hold cow dung sacred, supporters of Ofili have claimed. [con't]

US News Rankings Don’t Reflect Intangibles

The results are in, and according to the US News and World Report, the supposed gods of college rankings, we’re the seventh-best school in the nation. Now, seventh is nice, but we deserve better. Much better.

Herd Mentality Makes Pan Geos All The Rage With Trendy Eurotrash

Doug Meyer

The psychological constitution of the United States at the curtain call of the twentieth century may not exactly match the state of the Germanic Ego at the onset of the Great War, but apparently, the herd mentality reigns supreme as a phenomenon that respects no political nor temporal borders. At fair Pomona College, the banal comfort of the crowd seems to be an affliction that occurs with extreme virulence, and at regular intervals. [con't]

Baby Cows: Meat Is Murder, Veal Is Torture

By Peter Cook

Upon entering Frank dining hall on Saturday night, I saw, to my great dismay and disgust, that one of the dining options for the evening was veal cutlets. As if this were not bad enough in of itself, people were actually eating this atrocity!

As a vegetarian, I do not often agree with the morality behind many of the eating choices people make. However, I respect the fact that people are by nature omnivorous, and it is perfectly natural, although no longer truly necessary, to eat meat. Veal, however, is not natural, and the process by which calves are rendered into this delicacy is so cruel that it should secure just about anybody’s compassion. [con't]
