A Story About a Saturday Night

I was at a 70’s party in Eversole Courtyard a couple of weekends ago. Late 90’s hip-hop tunes blared out of the speakers, but the partygoers gladly ignored this minor incongruency and continued to "party on." A full spectrum of Pomona’s student body was represented on the dance floor, a place where racial lines were crossed and then subsequently freaked nasty. It was a slice of college life straight out of a glossy Tommy Hillfiger ad in Rolling Stone. The atmosphere was completed by the DJ’s scratching over a record by America’s favorite Hometown Hero, Bruce Springsteen. Satisfied with my observations, I went in search of a beer. [con't]

Symbolic Hostility As Bad As Violence

Among the numerous appeals to the disparate audience of the Claremont Colleges’ Social Justice teach-in on Thursday that were voiced in equally varying ways, Reverend Jesse Jackson’s broad and urgent message concerning the state of violence was perhaps the most universal. America is home to one of the most productive, affluent populations in the world, he said. It also has the greatest amount of violence at its center. [con't]

I am sick of hearing people bitch at every meal, in every class, and at every social event about the deficiencies of campus life this year. I am doubly sick because I have never seen more than 10 students at any opportunity to voice these concerns in a meaningful way.

I have decided that I would like to try to do something about this. I would like to focus on an area which I believe has a reasonable chance of bringing some success. I understand that the ASPC Senate has also taken up some of these concerns, and would like to avoid overlap with them. [con't]
