Svagdis Pleased With Baseball Finale

Nick Grudin

The Baseball team, last weekend, took one of three games against LaVerne in its final series of the season. Although the Hens were thoroughly abused by Leopard hitters in the first game, the double-header at LaVerne saw the Hens fight back and split their final two games of the season.

Friday afternoon, the Hens were hammered 16-4 in a contest that looked more like a homerun derby for the Leopards than a game. The Leos one-upped the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday (who hit three at Dodger Stadium) with four homers in one inning (no one hit two grand slams, but still). Three of those bombs were hit back-to-back-to-back. [con't]

Not everything can end happily ever after.

Though the Pomona-Pizter Women’s Softball team capitulated their season with five straight losses in the SCIAC round robin, there are plenty of positives to look back upon.

After beating Whittier 7-2 in the opening game of the round robin, the team lost to Occidental 5-2, to Cal Lutheran 7-0, to La Verne 3-1, to Redlands 5-3, and then to arch-foe CMS 5-3. [con't]

NFL Ownership Fraternity Stinks of Cigars, Hypocrites

"How many of these people (current NFL owners) could apply right now, today, and be an acceptable candidate? You think some of these people aren’t leveraged to the moon? Please. Just have the guts to say, ‘We don’t want you (failed prospective Washington Redskins owner Howard Milstein), and the whole ugly affair could have been averted.’"- Michael Wilbon, Washington Post columnist, cajoling the NFL owners to stop releasing such hypocritical statements concerning their anxieties over Milstein. The Women’s water polo squad capped off a three-game winning streak this week with an impressive win over the undefeated Occidental Tigers. The win is a huge one for the Hens who had lost their only previous match-up against Occidental.

The first two games of their streak were victories over LaVerne and Whittier. Although the Poets scared Pomona-Pitzer with an unorthodox zone-type defense, the Hens prevailed in overtime. [con't]

You’ve seen the table tents.

They are one of the most successful athletic organizations on campus: four straight league titles, untouchable regular season play, wins over colleges ten-times their size. They’ve only dropped two contests in five years (both coming in the postseason).

The Claremont Rugby Club (6-1) ended another stellar campaign three weeks ago, dropping their regional playoff game against Nevada Las-Vegas. The team finished unbeaten in league for the fourth consecutive year. The loss to UNLV also meant the team fell a game short of Nationals for the second straight year. Regional foe UC-San Diego successfully defended their national title this year. [con't]

When you’re heading downhill and your brakes give, you curse and scream and bemoan your existence.

Yet that feeling when you reach safety, when your car slows to a halt is gratifying.

Much in the same manner did the Pomona-Pitzer Golf team feel after a solid finish in their final, 36-hole SCIAC tournament on Tuesday, ending a long streak of unsatisfying play on the greens.
