Monday Decides Women’s Tennis Future

James Hodgson

The Pomona-Pitzer Women’s Tennis Team suffered a difficult fate at the SCIAC championships last weekend, as star Heather Gorman ’00 went down with an injury in the semifinals on Friday. But the team prevailed over Redlands, 7-2, in that match only to suffer a tough defeat without Sheree Schwartz ’02 in the lineup against CMS in the SCIAC championship Saturday, 7-2.

Gorman plays at the top seed in doubles and at the two position in singles, while Schwartz plays number two doubles and third singles, so though the loss of the two players may not be entirely equivalent to a top tier loss, it was significant nonetheless. [con't]

Men’s Tennis Bows Out in Conference Semis

The Pomona-Pitzer Men’s Tennis Team cruised into the SCIAC championships with hopes of glory and perhaps an upset of top team Redlands sprinkled in.

The team, however, never got that shot at the number one team in SCIAC, as they lost to Claremont-Mudd in the semifinals.

The crucial double’s point seemed to be the defining aspect of the match. It was the difference in the 4-3 contest. [con't]

"‘It’s like buying a car,’ [Tyrone] Williams said afterward. ‘You go to a salesman and they will tell you,"The Ford Explorer is the best truck ever made."’Then you go right up the street and the other guy will tell you "The Dodge Caravan... I promise you, I’ll give you the best deal. No one is going to give you a deal like this." ‘And then you go up the street and someone beats the deal.’"-Greg Garber, quoting lawyer Tyrone Williams on sports agents, from ESPN Magazine. [con't]

The baseball team (18-15-2, 9-9) swept past the Occidental Tigers (3-15, 5-17) in last weekend’s three game conference series. The combined scoring total over the three games was a devastating 34-7, as the Hens clobbered the hapless Tigers 11-2, 11-4 and 12-1.

The three wins pulled the Hens up to .500 in conference. [con't]

I usually shy away from discussing the off-campus sporting world in this space.

It’s because I get so disgusted reading about professional sports in collegiate newspapers. It’s happened a boatload of times since I arrived on campus in the fall of 1995. I grab a paper, as I’ve done daily since I was able to read, and turn immediately to the sports. The only time I ever toss away a section before I’ve fully inhaled it has been when one of these out-of-place articles spoil the section.

I mean really, who wants to read about the NBA in the Collage? [con't]

The SCIAC championships, held at Occidental College, finalized track’s conference season last weekend. As it should, the meet showcased both the Men’s and Women’s conferences competing to their full potential and featured a number of impressive and unlikely finishes.

The Men came in second in the conference, only defeated by the powerful squad of cross-campus rival, Claremont-Mudd. The Women almost took second as well but finished a meager nine points shy of Occidental’s score of 100. The CMS women also ran away with the SCIAC championship. [con't]
