Baseball Beats Up Beavers, Looks to LaVerne Nick Grudin Sports Associate The baseball team played their annual series against Cal Tech this weekend and demonstrated their much improved form. As the spring comes to a close the Hens are playing their best baseball of the season. Star outfielder Kevin Hickey 99 said, "Things are really coming together for us out there. People are doing what we always knew they could do. It was a matter of time before we started playing to our potential and now we really are." This coming of age was demonstrated in their first game against Cal Tech, played in Pasadena on Friday. The Hens took the contest by the incredible margin of 25-0. Young right fielder Ollie Morrison 02 said, "Yeah, we hammered their pitching and stayed sharp on defense, which is amazing considering that we were leading by so much. Our pitching was really good, too." The second game of the seriesthe first game of a Saturday doubleheader here at Alumni Fieldwas not as clear-cut. Up 8-2 in the 6th, Cal Tech threatened a comeback as a deep shot to right-center that came a few feet short of leaving the park. They only managed to get one run out of the play, because, as Morrison explained, "Their base runners arent too accustomed to long balls. They all tagged up. They probably could have gotten three runs off that hit and they only got one." The game ended with a score of 10-4, but, the Hens were unimpressed with their performance. Mike Witzansky 99 said, "We didnt play our best. I think we played down to their level, instead of playing the way we can." Game three saw the Hens back to peak form. An 11-0 victory that lasted a meager 1 hour and 45 minutes saw the Hens excel in all aspects of the game. Morrison said, "Our pitchers shut them out and kept the game short. Our offense was solid." Witzansky and Hickey each homered once. Despite the series sweep, Cal Tech has a much-improved squad from last season. Hickey said, "We were obviously the dominant team, but theyve come a long way since last year." Pomona-Pitzer has two more SCIAC series remaining this season. First they will play Occidental on Saturday and Sunday, and then, to close out the season, they will be tested against national Top 25 La Verne. Carson Maxted 02 said, "At this point in the season things are going great for us. Were solidifying as a unit. Were on a strong upswing and will close out the season strongly." Morrison agreed saying, "Everything is coming together. Its great to end the season strong, its just too bad we didnt start earlier." Top | Back to Sports | Next |
