Women’s Tennis Gets Lost in the Arizona Desert

James Hodgeson

Phoenix: the home of the Suns, the best thunderstorms, even better sunsets, and a hotbed for college tennis tournaments.

Well, perhaps the latter description of Phoenix is not entirely accurate, but last weekend the Pomona-Pitzer Women’s Tennis Team squared off in two battles in Arizona, first to Gustavus Adolphus (8-1) and then, in a shortened contest, to Trinity (TX) University (5-1). [con't]

Magic and Trailblazers Highlight Lost Season

The power structure in this abbreviated NBA season has been uniformly erratic. Just when it seems like a team is solidifying and playing consistently, they drop one to the Clippers?

The teams that have shown most enduring qualities this season are complete surprises. Who would’ve guessed that midway through the season Orlando and Portland would be dominating their respective conferences.

This phenomenon can be explained in a few ways. Firstly, there is no longer a perennial dominant force in the NBA without Michael Jordan. On top of the fall of the Bulls, the strike threw a lot of teams out of balance. [con't]

The Women’s Water Polo team kicked off their SCIAC season with an 8-1 loss to defending national champion Redlands last week.

Although the final score does not display it, the Sagehens are playing very well at this point in the season and are excited to get going against other SCIAC competitors.

The lone goal against Redlands was scored by youngster Joy Haviland PI ’02 on a four-meter attempt awarded for a heinous foul. [con't]

Yocom’s Mission: Team Hurdles

The Pomona-Pitzer Athletic Department has the biggest budget of any department on campus.

Every semester it generates some waste, some pain, some damaged egos, and a few kids are inevitably left out. Everyone involved has an opinion about certain coaches, administrators, players, and methods. Students, parents, faculty, and staff all have the right to complain sometimes. Big corporations foster detachment within the structure of the beast, its only natural.

But then, more than a few times a semester, a story like the student-athlete experience of Larissa Yocom ’99 pops up. [con't]

Softball Sweeps Notre Dame, Swept by Athenas

The past weeks have been quite revealing for the Pomona-Pitzer Softball Team.

Despite a couple of close, tough losses to Claremont-Mudd, the team (7-11) played well, enjoying two solid wins over the College of Notre Dame, 7-3 and 8-3.

Not to be confused with the University in Indiana, the College of Notre Dame is a Division III program, one that the team has traditionally handed defeats to over the past four years. Typical convention held firm as Pomona-Pitzer won again twice this season, only this year they had to fight back from behind. [con't]
