Sebadoh Proves That Indie is DeadJonathan Vanasco Contributing Writer Indie rock is dead. Sad, but true. New Yorks Village Voice recently ran an article enititled "The Graying of Indie Rock," about how everyone who once made the genre lively and vital is getting older, and how many of them are moving into electronic and hybrid projects. The kids? Hardcore is getting bigger and that emo shit is making a comeback; it seems as if no one cares about bobbing and being thin and aloof and all that. I know, it seems weird: I didnt believe it at first. Maybe it was just denial, or my having been abroad. But indie rock is dead. Completely. Its corpse is rotting, and there is no chance for a comeback. [con't]
Getting Ready for KohoutekDavid Roth Arts & Features Associate Yo, boom, check it: my man James "Garden City Cap Peeler" Keefe and I were cooling in Frary one night (literally: it was, as ever, fifty six degrees in the dining area) when we came across a table tent for Smiley 80s which, I think, is probably the single best item in the table tent or dining hall handout category that Ive ever seen. "Remember last year?," the flier tauntingly asked, beneath a picture of a fucked up smiley face. And when I say "fucked up smiley face," I mean a smiley face with a little tongue hanging out of the side of its mouth and xs where the eyes shouldve been. [con't]
Recent CCLA Film Picks Are IndieAmber Kain Photo Associate CCLAs film committee recently made a change. It broke what had become a tradition of screening predominantly mainstream movies as part of its on-going campus film series and deliberately broadened its schedule to include a wealth of noteworthy and highly acclaimed independent films. As part of this innovation and for the enjoyment of all five-college movie-goers next weekend, the committee will screen sex, lies and videotape, one of the sexiest, the slickest, the most penetrating films our generation has ever had the opportunity of missing. Keanu and Debra Discourse on The MatrixJason Hewitt & Chris Bissell Contributing Writers A conversation: Debra Cleaver and Keanu. Debra:The Wabowski Brothers directed The Matrix. They also directed Bound. These movies have nothing to do with one another. That something involves what we call Yonic Architecture, or the Architecture of Negation. This school of thought was coined by Yonnia Vaginum in the 17th Century C.E. and refers to the heretofore "magical" practice of levitation. The characters in The Matrix are able, through the Architecture of Negation, to levitate by manufacturing a Yonic Apparatus, which is a negatively-existing structure. This structure, which doesnt exist, resembles the Sontag Erection (previously known as the Smith Memorial Tower) in that it becomes tangible only in its articulation. [con't]
The Bev-Niner UpdateNora Lawrence Arts & Features Associate First we went to the Coop Store, where water bottles with maybe 40 or 50 ounces of water cost only 80 cents. Then we went to Walker Lounge, where the TV didnt åwork, and then Smiley Lounge, where a girl was watching "Dawsons Creek", and then we went to the Spanish Lounge, just in time for the credits. Luke Perry directing, yee haw! [con't]
Wu-Tang Gets Real With Jay n DerekJay Marietta & Derek Walters Arts & Features & Contributing Writer Derek and I were just sitting down at TSL stronghold to discuss Kahoutek, Nas, black on black crime, and other things hip-hop related, when, like killa bees from out the hive, in walk the core members of the Wu-Tang Clan! I guess this proves it, nobody can be ruled out for a surprise visit to TSL. Everyone should hang out here. Fortunately, Derek had been busy tracking down every Wu-Tang fringe members album on MPC just the other night, from Shyheim to Remedy, because, as he says, "Im just a Wu-crazy gambino, son." [con't]
