Volleyball Worth Respect
Editor,

Mainly, I am just disappointed. After a long season that proved to be extremely successful, once again Women’s Volleyball – yes, a VARSITY sport – is left unmentioned and unrecognized by The Student Life. For those who don’t know how the season ended, we placed second in SCIAC with a winning percentage in league of .643. That is amazing! Why? Because last year we placed 6 out of 7 teams, finishing just above Cal Tech, who was also the only team in SCIAC that we beat. Obviously, this is an incredible improvement which deserves to have much more attention than given to us by the school – especially from the school newspaper, many students’ only source of the outcomes of (women’s) athletic events.

I’m not complaining that we don’t attract many fans. I know that people just don’t enjoy attending volleyball games as much as they like going to football or men’s basketball games (although I’d love to say it’s because of the atmosphere, not the sports themselves.) I’m just asking for the respect that our team deserves. It would have been nice to have received the same amount of coverage as other varsity fall sports got, especially since we improved and played tremendously this season.

Sincerely,

Alex Wakeman ‘06
