On Snack:
Editor,
The ASPC Senate was left out of the decision to move Snack
to South Campus on Wednesdays. The decision, while really
a trivial issue, should have been brought before the Senate.
A group of student leaders from South Campus met with
Dean Quinley on several occasions and forced the change.
Bravo to them for a job well done. Two quick thoughts
on this issue:
Other Senators, including myself, were neither notified
nor provided with any information concerning the Snack
move until the Tuesday night before the first Wednesday
Snack! College policy should not be made by ad hoc committees,
and this sets a bad precedent for subsequent decisions
that affect the student body.
Alternatively, North Campus residents should not rush
to judgment. Most
of the Senate wasn't involved in the deliberations
about the issue, but let’s think about the other
side of the issue. Given the new Frosh Row, upper-classmen
rarely interact with under-classmen in a residential
setting. South Campus snack brings upper-classmen to
Frank. We North Campus residents should think about
the last time we ate at Frank. I see the values in this
decision, and I think we should focus on them. The point
that I hope to emphasize again here is that this decision
should have come before the Senate. We most likely would
have approved it after hearing the potential benefits
of the idea. Let me be the first on North Campus to
criticize the process, but applaud the policy. Let them
celebrate, but the reality is that the poor youngsters
will still have to trudge north every other night of
the week...and it’s getting colder.
