Sports Week Wrap-Up
By Ezekiel Pfeifer

Pomona-Pitzer tasted both real and symbolic victory over University of Chicago on Saturday, as new Pomona president David Oxtoby, a former U Chicago professor and dean, was inaugurated. On the football field, Jonathon Samples led the Sagehens to a 38-21 win, rushing for 256 yards on 24 carries, with four touchdowns. President Oxtoby thereby won a bet from a friend of his at University of Chicago, getting his prize in the form of a rich Chicago cheesecake.

The P-P men’s soccer team won as well this weekend, shutting out the Whittier team, 5-0. Sam Farina-Henry ‘07, Mario Velez ‘04, Joey Greenwald ‘07, Matt Lee-Ashley ‘04, and Ryan Takeshita ‘04 each added a goal in the Sagehen victory. Women’s soccer could not continue the winning streak for the Hens on the day however, dropping 2-0 to Whittier. The volleyball team lost on Friday to Chapman, ending their four-game winning streak. Alex Wakeman ‘06 made an impressive effort in the loss, with eleven kills and only two errors. The water polo team played four games last week at the Claremont Convergence tournament, winning three out of the four games.
