Last weekend Pomona College spared
no expense in celebrating the inauguration of David
Oxtoby as Pomona’s ninth president. The gala event,
set on the weekend between Oxtoby’s first meeting
of the Board of Trustees and Founder’s day, lasted
from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. The events ranged
from a casual bike ride to formal ceremonies and an
academic symposium. As part of the celebration, Pomona
welcomed representatives from colleges and universities
from around the world including several college presidents.
The weekend both celebrated Pomona’s past and
looked eagerly to the future.

Pomona’s Information Technology
Services shut down the Sagehen Server on October 9,
at the request of the Scripps Information Technology
department.
A message on the site’s homepage
(http://sagehen.dyndns.org) said, “So, Sagehen
Server is no longer here and will probably not be back.
ITS disconnected the site and claims the site violates
the acceptable use policy.”
The website had allowed students to
search computers on the five Claremont Colleges for
over 4.5 terabytes of music, movies, essays, programs
and images. None of the content was stored on the server
but the website offered a link to the content on the
provider’s computer.

Noise in Mason Disturbs Faculty and Students
By Logan Steiner
Staff Writer
Students and faculty with classes in
Mason Hall have had to contend with a barrage of unpleasant
noises during their class sessions this year. Renovations
are being performed on the south end of Mason to create
more office and laboratory space.
Many language and psychology department
faculty members in Mason have inadequate office and
research space, making this renovation “very necessary”
according to Associate Dean of the College Patricia
Smiley. The temporary remodeling process will conclude
in December. However a major renovation of Mason is
scheduled to begin in 2006. At that time, the building
will be gutted and all offices, classrooms, and research
facilities will be remodeled.
ASPC Seeks Summer Internship Funds

The walls of Peter Flueckiger’s
office are covered with literally hundreds of novels,
encyclopedias, dictionaries, and anthologies. The spines
of the books are lined with Japanese characters, making
them indecipherable to everyone but the most dedicated
of Japanese scholars, and even then, their contents
probably wouldn’t interest most.
“This one is a list of every book
written in Japan before the Meiji restoration,”
Flueckiger says, his eyes glowing with excitement behind
thick-framed glasses. Moving his prized rare book collection
from Tokyo, Japan, to Claremont was tough; the transition
from graduate school student to professor at Pomona
College was not.

If all goes according the Oldenborg
Task Force Committee (OTFC) to Oldenborg Center for
Modern Languages and International Relations might not
be used as a language dormitory in upcoming years. The
current language sections might instead be replaced
by a “village” of language houses and a
common facility.
The OTFC was appointed last year by
Dean of the College Gary Kates to evaluate Oldenborg’s
role at Pomona.

A conservative speaker
at Pomona criticizing the United States’ current
policy in Iraq?
“I never would have expected to
hear this viewpoint on Pomona’s campus,”
said a surprised Zack Grieman, class of ’07.
Tuesday night at Edmunds ballroom, a
crowd of over 300 students heard Danielle Pletka speak
about her belief that the U.S. has missed multiple opportunities
in rebuilding Iraq, and that we must rely more on the
Iraqi people in our efforts to create a stable democracy
there. Her speech was based on her opinion that the
U.S. government made the correct decision to remove
Saddam Hussein, a decision that should have been made
in the first Gulf War.
