Senate Briefs

ASPC President Ari Greenberg opened the meeting with introductions of the newly elected Senators. After brief announcements, Senators then spent over twenty minutes discussing what time they could meet in the future.

Sports Commissioner Ashley Hovey announced that the Rains Center will now be open until midnight seven nights a week for a trial period of one month. Residence Halls and Food Commissioner Karanda Bowman then attempted to explain the newly clarified plan for RLAC. Questions regarding the effectiveness of the current system, the change from elections to applications, and involvement of the Senate persisted until Academic Affairs Commissioner Kyle Warneck suggested that Bowman rewrite the bylaws as she saw fit.

Elections Commissioner Jackie Mark then presented a report on the recent election. Newly elected South Campus Representative Galen Benshoof questioned the legality of unofficial forums where alcohol is provided. Others mentioned that there had been other breaches of electoral procedures, including signs too close to the polls, friends shouting voting suggestions, and the legibility of forum information on each poster.

Greenberg proposed that the Speaker Series committee be added to the bylaws as three senators and three students at large who bring their suggestions to Senate for a three-fourths majority approval. Vice President Julie Stiglitz suggested that the balance should be four senators to two students at large, or perhaps three senators to two students at large. “Students at large are not scary,” said Greenberg, to nearly nonexistant support from his fellow senators. His original proposal was promptly approved.

The Budget Committee approved of requests from the Middle Eastern Dance Club and Students Against Sweatshops. Claremont for Clark’s request was denied, as the committee cannot grant money for political organizations.

Other issues at the meeting included the search for a student to sit on the Claremont City Council’s committee, a meeting for the 5-C Presidential Council, an explanation of this year’s Harwood Halloween, and a complaint about the massive password-resetting catastrophe that caused students to lose access to email.
