Pomona-Pitzer Hens in Spandex Slip Past CMS
By LAUREN SAUTER

Volleyball is one of those sports I didn’t play in high school (I guess all sports are sports I didn’t play in high school). However, I did play on my seventh grade volleyball team, as a C-string middle hitter. I quit halfway through the season, so you can imagine my respect and admiration for someone who makes it all the way to college. There are lot of women on the Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team who make volleyball look way easier than it is. And it’s not easy, trust me.

The Inner Tube Water Polo Championship that took place on September 30 at Haldeman Pool will go down as one of the most impassioned and intense athletic events ever to grace the Pomona College campus. The heavily favored Slippery Porcupines were eliminated in the semifinals, and the team called Erin Kahle went on to defeat Lyon 1 and take home the coveted championship.

Ultimate Club Sports Preview

What, exactly, are club sports? Well, they are sports that are not sponsored by the intercollegiate varsity athletics department, but which have galvanized sufficient interest throughout the colleges to form clubs. Although they receive a small stipend from the school, costs for equipment and traveling are subsidized by club dues and fund-raising efforts. They usually practice about twice a week, because members may be involved in other sports and activities throughout the year. Club sports include rugby, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, men’s volleyball, badminton, and ballroom dancing. (Side note: You may be surprised that ballroom dancing is considered to be a sport. You may be unaware that waltzing happens outside of Civil War movies and senior citizen activity hours. You may hate ballroom dancing. No one could not be reached for comment on the questionable qualifications of ballroom dancing as an “athletic” pursuit, but I have a few statements to make in it’s defense...wait, no I don’t.)

Rhodes Rolls Over Sagehens
By Ezekiel Pfeifer

The undefeated Sagehens traveled to Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday to play Rhodes College, full of confidence after one of the biggest wins in Pomona-Pitzer football history. The team returned Sunday with their first loss of the season and with the bad taste of defeat fresh in their mouths. Pomona-Pitzer lost to Rhodes 31-21 after having led in the third quarter, 21-16, the comeback taking the wind out of the travel-weary Sagehens.
