Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks
Pig Lib
Domino
Pig Lib is ex-Pavement front man, Stephen Malkmus'
second 'solo' release. While Malkmus gives credit to his group,
The Jicks on the cover, he is clearly the creative force behind
this record. Pig Lib is chalk full of Malkmus' distinctive
song writing style. Indeed, the only thing that separates
this album from a Pavement record is its cleaner sound and
the folk-rocky numbers. This is a fine record.
Jimi Hendrix
The Rainbow Bridge Concert
Purple Haze
Several months before his death, Jimi Hendrix played a show
in Maui, Hawaii with a reincarnation of Experience-Billy Cox
replaced Noel Redding on bass. Unfortunately, the band is
not as sharp or powerful as they once were. Tracks like 'Voodoo
Child' and 'Dolly Digger' seem lifeless. Luckily, Hendrix
and the boys are able to pull it together for a least one
track-'In From the Storm.' is incredible. This is a record
for the Hendrix enthusiast not the casual listener.
Forcefield
Roggaboggas
Load
Roggaboggas is the soundtrack to what appears to be-judging
from the liner notes-a rather disturbing art show. The linear
notes are filled with photographs of Jim Henson-on-acid type
creatures. While the music may have been great at the art
show, on the record it seems empty. It is acceptable mood
music but there is no depth or character to the electronic
soundscape compositions.
