Senate Briefs

Ritter to Speak

ASPC President Phil Kopczynski '03 began this week's Senate meeting with the customary approval of the last week's minutes, and then transitioned into a discussion of Scott Ritter's upcoming visit. The former Chief U.N. Weapons Inspector for Iraq will speak Friday, April 4, in Edmunds Ballroom at 7:30 p.m. 500 seats will be available for Pomona students who pick up their free tickets from the ASPC office, 92 tickets had been issued prior to the Tuesday meeting. Non-Pomona students and staff can purchase tickets for $5. Any remaining tickets will be distributed at the door immediately prior to the event.

Library Trial Period Delayed

Kopczynski then presented an update on the proposed April trial period of longer library hours. Kopczynski met with Dean of the College Gary Kates who chairs the consortium committee overseeing the library budget. Kates informed Kopczynski that acquiring the necessary funding and hiring additional staff would be impossible to do in time for an April trial period. Kopczynski and Kates are currently working toward a fall trial period. Dean Kates suggested a semester or year long trial might yield more useful information.

Kopczynski also reported that the Harvey Mudd College student government has endorsed a similar proposal asking for longer library hours. Vice President Julia Patzelt reported that the Pitzer student government also "approved a request for a trial period with the condition that [Pitzer College] not have to pay for it." Combined with the ASPC proposal and a similar proposal approved by Claremont McKenna College student senate, four of the Claremont Colleges have expressed the desire for longer library hours.

120 pound metal laundry baskets

Residence Halls and Food Commissioner Evan Sirc '03 then told the senators about his recent meeting with Deanna Bos, the housing director for the Office of Campus Life. Bos recommended Sirc select metal laundry bins for mounting in the campus laundry rooms as they would be more durable than the plastic variety. After many hours of searching, Sirc was able to locate only one supplier of such bins-a company in the United Kingdom which sells baskets weighing 120 pounds each. Sirc will contact a local Laundromat to obtain the name of their supplier and then meet with Bos again.

Student Fees Hard at Work

Kopczynski ended the meeting by asking Sirc to present designs for a Senate t-shirt. The senators selected a basic design which will have "ASPC senate tee-shirt" printed on the front with "Your student fees hard at work" printed either below or on the back. Sirc estimated the cost of the shirts to be approximately $10 each.
