Eight Pomona Faculty Searches Underway

The hunt for next year's new faculty hires is halfway completed, with four professors already signed on and other finalists visiting Pomona this week.

According to Dean of the College Gary Kates, the visiting finalists are being considered for two positions: a three-year visiting assistant professorship in the Theatre department, and a tenure track assistant professorship in the Linguistics & Cognitive Science Department.

Meanwhile, one three-year and three tenure track jobs have been filled. Joining the Pomona faculty next year will be Visiting Assistant Professor of Asian Languages & Literatures Eileen Cheng, Assistant Professor of Religious/Jewish Studies Oona Eisenstadt, Assistant Professor of German & Russian Stephanie Harves, and Assistant Professor of Economics Slavi Slavov.

Kates said Pomona has extended an offer to one candidate for an assistant professorship in Art/Art History & Media Studies, but has not heard back yet. The quest for a visiting professor of Computer Science is still ongoing.

"Most of the searches are fairly far along," observed Dean of Students Ann Quinley.

In addition to new faculty, the college is also seeking coaches, Kates said. The women's soccer and men's baseball teams need head coaches, but neither search has yet yielded a final result; both remain ongoing.

"I don't anticipate any unsuccessful searches," Kates predicted. He claimed that last year, they had a dozen going on at once.

Still, he noted that as far as he's concerned, none of the searches are technically over.

"For us, it's concluded when we receive a signed contract back from the candidate," he explained. "That usually takes about a month after the search has closed."

Kates said he expects to announce the final lineup of new professors to the public later this spring.
