Golf Opens Season

On Friday February 7, the Pomona-Pitzer men's golf team played for its first time this season in the Ken Sherman Invitational. Greg Wolfe '03 and Joe Gill '04 shot 76 in a best-ball format to lead the Sagehens. Scott Pearsoll '05 and Dylan Pelletier-Ross '06 came in next with a 79, and Jeff Anderson '05 and Patrick Hall '06 put up an 85. As a team Pomona-Pitzer finished fifth out of seven teams, with a total score of 24 over par.

The Sagehen golfer's skills were tested by rough weather at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club. Throughout the tournament they battled bitingly cold 30 to 40 mile per hour winds. "In those brutal conditions, they played as well as can be expected," said coach Lorn Foster.

The absence of Junior Captain Ben Hochstein '04 hurt Pomona-Pitzer's chances. "We really missed having Ben out there," said Foster. Hochstein has been sick with mononucleosis for the past two weeks, but plans on returning in time for the La Verne match on March 6.

Redlands captured the title, shooting even par as a team. La Verne came in second place at 13 over par, with Cal Lutheran and CMS tying for third at 17 over par. Occidental captured sixth place at 31 over par, with Cal Tech finishing last at 84 over par.

The team has high hopes this year. "Two untested newcomers who will challenge for a spot in the ladder are Patrick Hall and Dylan Pelletier-Ross," said Foster.
