The games against La Verne and CMS “will be challenging yet winnable games for us,” Coach Gall said. The Sagehens played well in both games, but they managed only to split the games 1-1.

The rain fell on Honolden Pool on Friday night as though this were Seattle, not Southern California. However, this didn’t stop the fans from coming out in droves to witness an exciting match between the Pomona-Pitzer men’s water polo team and their rivals CMS. As their fans cheered raucously, P-P came out strong and took the lead in the first quarter. Going into the second quarter with a 4-0 lead, the game looked to be in Sagehen hands (or wings).

Unfortunately, during the second quarter CMS found the back of the net three times and the Sagehens countered with only two goals. Going into halftime, however, the Sagehens remained in the lead as the crowd began to heckle the opposition, singing the classic “olé, olé, olé” soccer chant.

During the third quarter goalie Carlo Diy ’06 kept the CMS team at bay with some great saves. The last quarter saw CMS pick up their game and they were only one goal behind the Sagehens with one minute left in the game. P-P remained calm and played strong defense to shut CMS out until the end of the game. Ben Speicher ’03 had a phenomenal game with seven goals, four steals, and one assist. Sagehens Tom Krebs ’04, Eric Kort ‘04, and Glenn Anderson ’06 also scored one goal each.

The next day, P-P played La Verne in another SCIAC match, which they lost 8-5.

The Sagehens ended the first quarter tied at two-two. However, they were not able to keep up the intensity of the first quarter throughout the match. By halftime they were down by two and continued to struggle throughout the rest of the game. Diy made seven saves in the game and Anderson led the team in goals with two in this disappointing end to the regular SCIAC season.

The Sagehens ended their regular season with a SCIAC record of three-three. Next they travel to Redlands for the SCIAC tournament and with all the previous SCIAC games being so close, anything is possible at the tournament this Saturday.
