Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich visited Claremont McKenna to speak on issues ranging from President Bush's middle-eastern foreign policy to election predictions.

Gingrich Predicts GOP Vicotry at Athenaeum
By Justin duRivage

If Gingrich was soft-spoken, he was no less partisan, and no less conservative, than he was as the Republican’s standard-bearer during the mid-nineties. During the press conferences that preceded his lecture, the former Speaker predicted that Republicans would gain seats in the House due to President Bush’s campaigning. Going a step further, he also predicted that Republicans would establish themselves as the majority party by 2008. Gingrich, in talking about his Six Challenges and an Inquiry, described many of his solutions. Calling Saddam Hussein “the most dangerous person since Adolph Hitler,” the former Speaker expressed his strong support for the President’s foreign policy.

Neighbors, Noise End Harwood
By Jeff Horwitz
News Editor

For the third time in four years, noise complaints brought an early end to Pomona’s Harwood Halloween. At approximately 11:40 Saturday night, Harwood’s organizers complied with the Claremont Police Department’s order to pull the plug on both the last few minutes of Ozomotli’s show and the planned after-party. The near-perennial shut down of Harwood, Pomona’s largest and most expensive party of the year, has generated mutual accusations of insensitivity from the party’s organizers and Claremont residents.

Students Clash Over Anti-Smoking Proposal
By Susan Hoang
News Writer

The informal discussion led by the head of the Coop Committee, Vice President of the ASPC Julia Patzelt ’03, quickly became heated as the students strongly voiced their opinions about removing cigarettes from the Coop Store. There was consensus among the smokers present that this proposal was an attempt at “social engineering.” Besides social engineering, there were a number of reasons given to oppose the proposal, including that if students could not get cigarettes on campus, they were likely to drive drunk to the store to get some, that secondhand smoke affected few people on campus and that since the Coop Store was a student-run organization, if there was a demand for the product within legal limits, the Coop should supply it. The forum became an intense exchange between the smokers and Patzelt.

Oldenborg Committee Turns to Maryland
By Justin duRivage
News Writer

Phoenix Liu, coordinator of Language House, an international center and dormitory at the University of Maryland – College Park, spoke at the Oldenborg Center last Wednesday about the international center she manages. The Oldenborg Task Force, a group formed earlier this year by Dean Garry Kates to reevaluate the future of Oldenborg, brought Dr. Liu to Pomona. In her remarks Liu described a foreign language residence hall much more regimented than the Oldenborg Center.
