Letter from The Editor
Images of votive candles, American
flags and somber faces have dominated the front pages of our newspapers
in the past week and a half. Although a year has passed, to many
Americans the memory of the lives lost on September 11 is still
a sorrow and a burden. Even those with no previous connection to
those who died mourned the loss. “We are all New Yorkers,”
goes the saying. Along with the deep, and sincere, feelings of sadness
for the death of our countrymen, a darker side of remembrance has
arisen. America seems to deal with tragedy by making it a commodity,
nowhere more so than in the media. Every last angle, every last
detail has been fodder for the nightly newscast. We at The Student
Life, however, have decided to put another tragedy front and center
for the moment, the death of our fellow student John Purvis. This
choice was made not to downplay what is certainly a significant
and terrible day, nor to devalue the many lives that were lost.
We do feel however, that John’s tragic death merits more of
our attention at this time for two reasons: 1) It is more recent,
and more importantly, 2) we’ve lost one of our own.. Love
the ones you’re with, your neighbors, your classmates. Miss
them when they’re gone. Let’s not lose sight of the
smaller scale dangers to human life in our own community, even as
inevitably we tend to be preoccupied with the anniversary of that
massive, horrible cataclysm.
Sincerely,
Aidan Doherty
