Senate Briefs

Phone Service

In their last meeting the 5-C Senate discussed phone service. Discussion centered around student complaints and also about possible new phone services. Student complaints have been compiled. This issue will be addressed by Senate next week.

Senate Digester

ASPC President Jake Oken-Berg ’02 has spoken to the Student Affairs office about setting up a separate Digester e-mail to go out to students and would include information about Senate.

Search for Huntley Director

The search for Huntley Bookstore Director has resulted in the selection of three final candidates. There will be a forum for interested students to interview the final candidates, and Oken-Berg requested that a Senator attend each of the forums.

Housing Decision

Senior Class President Cristina Francisco ’02 requested that the Head Sponsors attend the meeting to inform Senate about next year’s housing situation. Head Sponsor Pamela Grewal ’03 informed Senate that last school year, a consulting firm came to analyze the school’s housing. Their conclusion was that all freshmen should be on south campus.

Grewal felt that the report ignored Pomona culture, and sponsor groups. Dean of Students Ann Quinley said that the trustees voted on the issue, and they decided to move all freshmen to South Campus next year for a trial basis. North Campus Representative Sam Brenner ’02 suggested that Senate come up with a creative way to gauge student opinions on this issue. Quinley said she would provide the full text of the Trustees’ decision, along with the consulting firm’s report.

Off-Campus Representative Mikey Gaertner ‘02 asked Quinley what the college’s long term plans were, specifically if any dorms would be built in the near future. Quinley said that there are currently no plans to build a new dorm, but that the college will try to plan the number of students they accept in a way that will fit the scope of our existing student housing.

Oken-Berg said that if he feels that students are against the trustees’ decision, he will go before the trustees to inform them of student opinion.

Senate Consciousness Committee

Oken-Berg informed Senate that the table tents were distributed to dining halls, and that students seemed to be reading them. He also announced that the dates for the Senate Social are November 27 at 8 p.m. in Lyon Lounge and November 28 at 10 p.m. in Walker Lounge.

Oken-Berg sad he was "envisioning it as a Senate pot luck where Senators will introduce themselves and talk to students about specific concerns." Residence Hall and Food Commissioner Mike Rush ’04 informed Senate that next semester, the Office of Campus Life will publish the names and positions of all the Senators on the second page of the directory.

Campus Events Commissioner Liz Fasse said that more table tents will go out later with information on projects that Senators are working on.

Senate Shirt

The Senate shirt has been designed. It will be a 3/4 sleeve baseball jersey.

Parking Spaces

Fasse met with James Hansen and she requested that he re-assign 10 staff parking paces to students. He needs to bring this to the CUC Vice-Presdients before it can be changed.

DDP

Because the next faculty meeting will not be until late January, Brenner wants to reissue the table tents with the DDP information and also continue with the survey. Also, proponents of DDP are planning to host a forum. Oken-Berg does not want to have a full discussion in the Senate until all the survey results have been collected. The curriculum committee formed a DDP sub-committee.

Walkerstock

Freshman President Alex Borst ’05 asked for suggestion about who to contact for food donations for the Walkerstock event.

Equipping Kitchens

Rush said that the Office of Campus Life was not willing to give funds for the purchase of cooking equipment for kitchens, because when they did so in the past, the utensils were stolen. Oken-Berg suggested that Senate provide half of the funds and the Office of Campus life match the rest. Oken-Berg took a straw poll about whether equipping kitchens is a priority for Senate. Nine Senators voted yes, and two voted no. Quinley offered to talk to the Office of Campus Life again.
