War Hides New Federal Policies
By PETER DOUGLAS
Staff Writer

A few weeks ago a friend sent me an e-mail asking me to sign a petition opposing the Federal Marriage Amendment. When I received this e-mail, I was surprised, since I had never heard of any Federal Marriage Amendment and I generally am well-informed on current events.

Retreat Addresses Racial Issues
By KRISTINE YEN
Staff Writer

The weekend was finally here. After an extraordinarily long week, the last way I really wanted to spend my free time was sitting through five total hours of dizzying drives, having serious discussions about important racial issues. Even though I realized the severity of the racial problem, I didn’t believe that going on the AAMP retreat would change anything.

5-Cs Need Asian American Resource Center
By SUSAN HSIEH & NEEL GARLAPATI
Contributing Writers

The last few months have seen a flurry of student activity among Asian Americans across the Claremont Colleges concerning the establishment of resources and student services that many students feel have long been overdue. Students have clearly demonstrated a need for increased services, fighting marginalization by forming new mentor groups and student centers.

Extended Thanksgiving Break Would Allow More to Go Home
By JUSTIN DURIVAGE
Opinions Associate

I am not going home for Thanksgiving. I know many who aren’t. Thanksgiving break at Pomona, like most other colleges, starts on Thanksgiving Day (well, 3PM Wednesday, technically). With break only four days long, my prospects for going home for the holiday are non-existent. The flight to the East Coast, or in my case the Midwest, takes an entire day. Because of this, I would only have three days with my family if I left Wednesday.

Realistic Sex Ed Should Emphasize Safety
By ROBIN STARR
Opinions Associate

In many high schools across the country, students are still being told never to have premarital sex, as if we are still in the 1940’s or some other time period, when any mention of what goes on between the sheets was completely taboo. Although the idea that we can instill middle and high schoolers with a desire to refrain from sexual activity is in many ways valiant, it does more harm than good by taking an all-or-nothing approach to sex.

Reject Use of Term ‘People of Color’
By JACQUELINE WONG-HERNANDEZ
Opinions Editor

I am not a woman of color. At least, I refuse to call myself one. When people ask me to identify my cultural heritage, I usually reply that I am of Mexican and Chinese descent. I might even say I am Asian and Latino. In other words, it is not that I refuse be a "woman of color" because I am ashamed of my heritage, certainly not.
