Senate Briefs
Announcements
Janet Shin is introduced as the new Senate Secretary.
Phone Service
Doug Bernstein says V-Tec technology is not compatible with our current system. There have been complaints from students about not getting their phone bills. ASPC President Jake Oken-Berg 02 will contact the telephone service.
Course Review
Bernstein proposes the course review be administered online before students check their grades via Internet. North Campus Representative Sam Brenner 02 states that not all students will have Internet access over break and she does not feel comfortable making the course review mandatory. Sports Commissioner Evan Sirc 03 proposes distributing course reviews in registration packets. Oken-Berg acknowledges the problem that seniors will not fill out reviews for second semester.
Dean of students Anne Quinley proposes to have the course review after checking grades online. Oken-Berg feels that grades may influence the students reviews.
Residence Halls and Food Commissioner Mike Rush 04 proposes that teachers should post syllabi online. Oken-Berg agrees and will put his proposal on the Senate to-do list. Bernstein proposes that WebCt should be encouraged. Oken-Berg addresses the possibility of hybrid questions (making some questions mandatory and others optional), and the possibility of allowing students to review courses any time instead of just when checking grades online. Brenner and others claim to not have received Jakes e-mail proposal. Oken-Berg will resend his proposal.
Proposed Bylaws Change
Rush proposes to change the bylaws so that "at least one member from RHS" sits on the Residence Halls Committee and hold the voting power of one member. Currently, two members of RHS sit on the committee. Rush would also like to have one non-voting member from CCLA on the committee. Thirteen Senators vote in favor of change, none oppose. Motion passes unanimously.
Speakers Committee
Communications Commissioner Dru Hilty 02 and her committee of 8-9 students are ready to start the process of selecting a speaker and just need to find the time to meet.
Dryers
Brenner says she will meet Monday at noon with the representative of the dryer company, Web. All dryers should be fixed now.
There are problems on North Campus with coin machines.
South Campus Representative Hans Hassell 04 will send out a digester to south campus to poll the students on their concerns with dryer problems.
Recycling on North Campus
Environmental Affairs Commissioner Andrew Cvitanovich 02 is meeting with Jim Hansen to figure out logistics for collecting recycling bins. Oken-Berg suggests that an education committee be formed to inform students what we can or cannot recycle and what bins to use.
Student Parking Problems
Campus Events Commissioner Liz Fasse 02 reports the progress of her monitoring the north campus parking lot near Baxter. She is watching to see how the staff spaces are used, and if she can prove they are extra spaces, some may be marked for students. Even in the mornings, there are about ten free faculty spaces and no student spaces available. She will continue monitoring the lot during the next week. Oken-Berg asks to make sure she counts how many student spaces are available.
DDP Update
Brenner has the table tents that offer the pros and cons of the Dynamics of Difference and Power overlay requirement proposal ready and will soon start polling students at snack.
Other Business
Rush notes there is an adequate budget for Safe Rides, a program giving free rides home for Pomona students within a five-mile radius. Cards with information of the program will be made soon. Quinley says there is a considerable amount of money for her Public Affairs Committee. She will create a taskforce with Community Affairs Commissioner Supriya Patel 04 to effectively spend the funds.
Fasse recaps Harwood Halloween: as of yet there is no final count of how much money has been made or lost. She also addresses the problem of the bad treatment the event committee received from the student body. She also notes the hired security was awful.
