Terrorism is Paralyzing America

The nation is on its highest alert today, as it has been since Monday’s announcement by Attorney General John Ashcroft of a possible terrorist threat during this one week period of time. Yet this message, aired repeatedly on almost every news and radio station, and headlining the world’s newspapers, contributed nothing that could be quantified or qualified as concrete, or even useful, to the residents of this already plagued country.

Admissions Should Reduce Class Sizes

November 15 is the first Early Decision deadline for applicants to Pomona’s Class of 2006. The College’s admission committee will, as always, consider a broad variety of factors in selecting qualified candidates. As Pomona’s notoriety increases (with commendable precision, the official web site notes "1,005 media mentions in 2000-01"), admission will inevitably become even more selective.

Student Abroad Responds To J-Board Case

I am shocked to learn that the Pomona College community has permitted an injustice of this magnitude to occur. Of course I refer to the case of a verbal altercation that occurred between students Mike Cadoux ’04 and Grey Norton ’04 and Professor Valorie Thomas on September 9–an incident which has since been inflated to outrageous proportions and resulted in the suspension of both students for the remainder of the academic year.

Sexual Harassment Education Explained

I am writing in response to Kevin Herms’ letter in the October 12, 2001 issue of TSL. I am one of the Associate Deans of the College and also serve as one of the Harassment and Discrimination Grievance Officers. One of my responsibilities as a Grievance Officer is to help educate our community about issues related to harassment and discrimination, including sexual harassment and assault.

Dean Gives Rationale for J-Board Training

I’d like to respond briefly to Kevin Herms’ letter in the October 12 issue of TSL that was printed under the title, "J-Board Policies Sexist in Nature."

Protesters Should Not Call War Racist

I take issue with protesters that label U.S. military action in Afghanistan racist. The United States is fighting in Afghanistan because the Taliban regime supports the terrorist network responsible for the September 11 attacks and harbors the leader of that network. The actions of the United States are in no way motivated by the race of the Taliban or the people of Afghanistan.

Americans Have Good Reason to Dissent

We, the Student Peace Coalition, would like to respond to Austin Harris’ view that "Instead of Protesting, Students Should Support the Government." We feel strongly that it is our right and our duty to publicly voice criticism of the government when we are not being represented. Only one congressperson dared to vote for caution and restraint rather than for full endorsement of the administration’s military tactics.

Flaws Mar Otherwise Strong Coverage

I love TSL. This semester has included some interesting articles, and I, for one, have thoroughly enjoyed it. I do, however, have some beef I would like to throw into the stew. Here we go: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Electric Cars Outperform Others

I am writing this letter to share my displeasure in yet another article full of uninformed opinions about the type of car I drive. I was very disappointed that this article actually appeared in my own school newspaper.

Former J-Board Chair Sets Record Straight

What struck me most about [the October 15 issue ofTSL] was how much interest and involvement there seems to be in Judicial Council issues on campus, as expressed through no less than three letters to the editor. While I firmly believe that the issues raised in each of these three letters merit detailed responses, I feel most provoked by and qualified to respond to Mr. Kevin Herms’ letter concerning what he claims to be J-Board’s sexist policies.
