FIVE DOLLAR Review
Tipsy
Hard Petting
(Asphodel 2000)
Mellow, ethereal, Kindercore-esque...guarenteed to seduce. This is very loungey and very sexy music. The B-side of single is XXXmas and comes complete with a Roman Catholic mix.
Arab on Radar
Soak the Saddle
(Skin Graft 1999)
Rhode Islands best give us their 2nd full length of exciting, spastic, confrontational punk/no-wave-agit-yelp-rock. An unholy union of Big Black, Teenage Jesus, and early Pere Ubu with Satan on helium-charged vocal duty. Songs include Fondle the immigrants, I reject the use of condoms, and Primitive Stink.
Luigee Trademarque
Bande Original
(Rectangle 2001)
Gert Wildens (Schoolgirl Report) modern French counterpart? Sure, why not? Three discs of oft unlikely PORN MUSIC! There are way too many tracks to recommend, so do yourself a favor - spend an hour alone with this disc and the go get your listener off. Musically, that is. Everything from sexy-lounge to electrobeat to spacey experimental to fun and silly to brash and funky.
Faint
Blank-Wave Arcade
(Saddle Creek 1999)
Electronic synth-pop, often reminiscent of the sounds of the 80s. One press release calls it "Thomas Dolby meets Pac Man...Pulp meets Devo...a hardcore Duran Duran." Nevermind all that, this album is sexy as hell and will get you dancing immediately.
Peaches
The Teaches of Peaches
(Kitty-Yo 2001)
Its really too bad Peaches has such foul mouths, or else this would have been the KSPC hit for 2001...and deservedly so. Its two women and a 505 drum machine doing lo-fi beats with raunchy lyrics. Despite the raunchy lyrics and song titles (cum undone, fuck the pain away, diddle my skittle, etc), peaches give listeners a positive view of women who dont bow down to the male-dominated sex world.
Devics
The Ghost in the Girl
(Splinter 1999)
Holy freakin cow, this is good. This broods, soars and glows and is unrelentingly passionate. The vocals growl, purr and shimmer. A standing bass, occasional piano and accordion give the songs a smoky cabaret feel.
