FIVE DOLLAR

Various Artists

Mush Filmstrip (frame 1)

(Mush/Shadow)

The great Mush label specializes in the more creative and underground side of Hip-Hop, from downtempo to experimental. Their label sampler from this summer was a minor hit on KSPC a couple of months ago. This is a compilation of the first four years of Mush’s output and features some of the label’s finest: So Called Artists, Aesop Rock, Boom Bip, Nickodemus, the Pedestrian, Radioinactive, etc

Various Artists

Darker Than Blue: Soul from Jamdown 1973-80

( Blood and Fire)

Excellent compilation of various Jamaican bands doing raw R&B, soul-funk and dub-bluebeat-rocksteady. Influences of James Brown, Booker T, Jimmy Smith, Curtis Mayfield, and the Meters.

Dead Moon

Thrash and Burn

(Empty)

Dead Moon is a real rock and roll band. Few "rock" bands today write such great irony-free songs and play them with such heartfelt urgency. I don’t have much time for music these days, but I’ll always find time for Dead Moon. Dead Moon ROCKS!

Rashied Ali

Ali/Belogenis/Morris: live at Tonic

( DIW)

One of the best things I’ve heard this year. Drummer Godhead Rashied Ali’s new one (with 2 minor gods) is as amazing as the highpoint of 60’s ESP releases. Intense, smoky, soulful, fluid, energetic and inspired post-bop perfectly recorded in a live setting. The best jazz is not mellow!

The Residents

Stars & Hank Forever

East Side Digital

This album is the second part in the American composer series.  This cd places music pillars Hank Williams and John Phillip Sousa next to each other.  The Williams side is more accessible and easier to listen to. However, I found the Sousa side more satisfying because of the inclusion of crowd noises to the marches.
