5-C Senate

The first meeting for the five-college senate will be held this weekend. Normally, the north and south campus senators would go to the meeting, however, since they haven't been elected, two other senators will go.

Senior Class Events

Sara explained the new schedule of senior and other campus events. The Margaritaville party is scheduled for October 5, the trip to The Price is Right will be on Thursday October 11, Benny will spin on Walker Beach on Friday and the AIDS Walk will be on October 21.

Election Commissioner Nominee Approved

Ryan Dugger '03 was selected as election commissioner.

Preferential Voting

Welles Miller proposed to change the process of tallying votes for student elections by introducing preferential voting. Rather than checking off one candidate, voters rate the candidates from first to fourth choice. Student votes are then counted, progressively giving preference to secondary and then tertiary choices until one candidate wins the majority. Reasons in favor of this system is that it would eliminate run-off elections, which typically have a drastically lower turn-out than regular elections, Neil Gerard said. The system would also save money and time for voters and candidates. Such a system is used in Australia and at UC Berkeley with relatively no problems, Miller said. Drawbacks are that it is a more complicated and confusing system that would change very little. Jake Oken-Berg suggested trying the system out in the upcoming elections. Three senate members voted in favor, five were opposed. The measure did not pass.

Committee Appointments

The commissioners of sports, student/faculty interaction, community affairs and environmental quality began appointing members for their committees.

Speaker Program

Dru Hilty, commissioner of the print media committee submitted the list received from students via email with names of possible speakers. The senate plans to appoint a committee to sort through the list and propose potential candidates.

Course Review Workgroup

Scott, Jake, Cristina, Michio are working on forming a committee for the course review workshop. Students want a universal course review with high turnout, senators are exploring ways to make course reviews mandatory

New Time for Senate Meeting

Anticipating the upcoming election, the senate tried to find a new time to convene. It currently meets at 11:15 am on Tuesdays, a time that coincides with the freshman ID1 course. Oken-Berg is very busy, and the senate is stumped by when they could all gather.

Seventy Dollars to Symposium for Wine

The symposium organizers asked for $80 for wine at their event for next week. Michio Brunner, vice president, recommended $70, which passed unanimously. Senate had allocated them $60 the week before, but Brunner said they ran out of money, so we gave them an extra $10, upping their allocation to $70.
