P-P Softball Continues to Struggle

By David Park
Sports Associate

I will not lie to you when it comes to the last two Sagehen softball games. I’ll make it quick and hopefully painless: in the last two games, the Hens had one hit– total. In a season that has not been all-too-kind to them, the Sagehens began promisingly behind Sharon Silveira’s ’01 leadoff single. However, that was all the play the defense would see for the next 33 at-bats.

The Sagehens had one-hit against the potent pitching staff of Gustavus Adolphus, which sounds more like a Spanish goliath than any college I’ve heard of.

To the Sagehens’ credit, the game was close until the last inning. Trailing 2-0, a dropped pop fly with two outs and the bases loaded sparked a six-run sixth inning, ending 8-0.

It was really all very hard to watch.

And the second game against Chapman was in fact different. This time around, the struggling offense was no-hit and struck out six times. Chapman had their number and they had it in spades.

Other than a spectacular running catch by Melanie Philips ’03 in right field, there was little to smile about. I wish I could say something else happened.

That someone streaked across the field and that the Friends of the BFS came and locked down Chapman field. But six innings and 12 runs later, each team quietly went on their way.

With the exceptions of Jocelyn Burke ’02 (.333), Ashely Tompson ’03 (.321), and Silveira (.300), no Sagehen batter is hitting over .300. The next closest batter is Dara Sievers PI ’03 at .238. The rest of the stat sheet is not very promising, as seven batters have fallen below the .200 mark.

Currently, the Lady Sagehens are last in SCIAC, without a win in seven tries. However, the Hens remain optimistic for the remainder of the season.

"We’re really strong defensively, but we just got to get our bats going," Philips commented. "Once that goes it’ll all click."

Next up for the Sagehens is a three game series against SCIAC-opponent Occidental. Pomona-Pitzer plays the Tigers today at 3pm.
