BFS Resolution
ASPC President Brian Andrews 01 noted that there has been much discontent with the location of KGI on the Bernard Field Station. He proposed a senate resolution supporting preservation of the BFS. North Campus Senator Grayson Schaffer 01 suggested one amendment to Andrews proposal. He questioned whether there was a need for a center to study the BFS, since these types of studies are already done through the biology departments of individual colleges.
Schaffer and Shawn noted that KGIs mission doesnt fit in with the missions of the other colleges, and Schaffer expressed concern that new colleges such as ITT Tech and deVry might spring up on the site. Schaffer reiterated that the land at BFS was to be used for purposes of higher learning.
The representative of the supporters of the BFS noted that President of KGI Henry Kiggs does not have a Ph.D. Freshman Class Representative Mike Rush 04 asked for clarification of the issue: why are we trying to get rid of KGI? Isnt it too late for that?
Andrews noted that although KGI exists, he doesnt think it is right for them to build on the BFS. Shawn said that Keck doesnt need to be so close to the other schools. Director of the Campus Center Neil Gerard noted that the space that Keck is currently using is theirs; it is leased land. He noted that the faculty are disappointed that Keck faculty will have no tenure and that unlike the other schools Keck is built for applied, rather than theoretical, purposes.
Rush and South Campus Representative Adam Rick 02 asked if sections calling for leniency for student code violations by protestors could be separated from the BFS resolution. Dean of Students Anne Quinley was asked to file charges against the student protestors because they violated the student code. He also noted that when students participate in civil disobedience they expect repercussions.
A representative from the supporters of BFS noted that filing student charges is completely Dean Quinleys decision and that she isnt being pressured by CUC, and that Pitzer decided to absolve the charges against its students. Rush noted that the Senate did not have the right to pardon the student violators. Motion to adopt the resolution. Rick asked for an amendment eliminating some paragraphs from the resolution. Motion to amend was approved unanimously. Schaffer asked for an amendment to add "whereas the Bernard Field Station serves a more educational purpose than the 9-hole golf course which was built on the same land trust" in place of paragraph 6. Motion for this addition approved unanimously. Rick asked for an elimination of all the words after "BFS" in section 10. Motion approved with one opposed and one abstention. Motion to adopt the resolution with changes approved. Schaffer expressed disappointment that no one from the Friends of the Bernard Field Station has signed up to run for Environmental Affairs Commissioner.
