P-P Tennis Hopeful Despite Loss at the Hooves of Purple Cows

By David Park

The first game against fifth ranked Williams College on Friday ended closely, as the Sagehens took two out of three doubles matches but lost four of six singles matches, ending the day with a close 4-5 loss.

Backed by a comeback doubles victory by Betsy Mork ’04 and Chelsea Heller ’04, who were down 5-7 but bounced back to win the match 9-7, the Sagehens took a 2-to-1 match lead going into the singles competition.

Going into the final singles match, both teams were knotted at four, but Williams player Kate Troy took a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Heller to secure the win.

It was simple. It was close. Both teams played well and hard.

The second day, however, was far more embarrassing and painful to watch. Facing a struggling Pacific Lutheran team, the Sagehens ran about as they pleased, racking up nine wins to Pacific Lutheran’s zero.

Only Pacific Lutheran player Becky Summerer was able to take a Sagehen player, Chelsea Heller, to three sets, only to lose in the third set.

The closest they got in the doubles matches was 8-3, but after that was all she wrote…

Then again, we really should have known better. You can’t beat someone 9-0 and expect to get away with it, especially if your next match is against Division III’s number one ranked women’s tennis team in the nation, Trinity College… from Texas. And you know what they say about tennis players from Texas. They’re really rich. I don’t know if this necessarily makes them better tennis players or not, but being rich doesn’t hurt.

Pomona-Pitzer jumped ahead to a two to one match lead after promising doubles performances by national doubles champions Sheree Schwartz ’02 and Meghan Gould ’01 who beat Trinity players Abbe Ulrich and Lauren Cumming eight sets to two. The Mork and Heller tandem also captured a victory nine sets to eight to finish the weekend undefeated 3-0.

Then what went around, came around with a bag of chips. As the fit hit the shan, Trinity won every set in the singles competition, to finish the day with a strong 7-2 victory. Since this isn’t about an article about Trinity, I’ll spare you the blood and gore.

Perhaps the most promising attribute to come out of this weekend is the fact that CMS, those wild Jets from sixth street, fell 9-0 to Williams while the Sagehens lost to Williams by only one match. And we all know that it’s not if you win or lose, it’s how much you beat CMS by.

"I think the team is coming together well," Schwartz comments. "The freshmen are stepping up and playing well. We are right there. We had two close losses to teams that are [ranked] five [and] six in the nation, Williams and Emory. But [CMS] lost to Williams 9-0. I think they’re about the same, but we’ve improved, and this year we should take it."
