Track Looking For a Big Victory At CMS

By Conor Gallogly
Sports Editor

The men’s and women’s track teams have witnessed numerous excellent individual performances over spring break and last weekend against La Verne. Two runners and one field athlete provisionally qualified for nationals. The Sagehens look to bring this momentum into next Friday’s meet against CMS.

Provisionally’ qualified means that the individual or relay is eligible for nationals, but not guaranteed a spot. The automatic qualifiers go and then the best provisional qualifiers are selected until each event has 16 participants.

Laura Bishop ’03 ran the 5000m for the first time over break, but managed to break the 17-year-old Pomona-Pitzer record. She won the race with a 17:50.34 time that also is good enough to provisionally qualify for nationals. Earlier this season, Bishop also ran the third best 3000m in Pomona-Pitzer history.

At La Verne, Jamie Burns PI ’03 ran a personal record in the 1500m and Lily Homes ’04 ran personal bests in the 100m and 200m. Alex Hui ’01 finished with a personal best in the hammer throw. Jeaneen Chapman ’01 reached a personal record in the shot put.

Ari Polychronopoulos PI ’01 threw the hammer 170’ 2" on Friday at Cal State Northridge. That mark is good enough to provisionally qualify for nationals. The automatic qualifying mark is 55.28m or about 184’.

On Saturday against La Verne, Adam Boardman ’01 ran a personal-record 4:03 1500m race. Boardman also provisionally qualified for the 3000m steeplechase over spring break. Although his time of 9:14.44 was the fourth best time in Pomona-Pitzer history, Boardman is confident that his time will drop before nationals. "I ran a solid time, but it was obvious that my technique needs a little work. When that happens I think I can run a lot faster," said Boardman.

Freshman Matt Franck PI ran the sixth fastest 10,000m time in Pomona-Pitzer history. He finished in 32:28.

Thus the Sagehens look to pummel the Stags and Athenas with a mixture of brawn and speed. So make the trek across Sixth Street next Friday afternoon to watch the mighty Sagehens.
