By Robin Starr
Contributing Writer

Pomona-Pitzer’s baseball team took two of three games from Whittier this weekend. Friday, playing at home, the Sagehens fell by a score of 5-1. On Saturday, however, Pomona-Pitzer struck back by sweeping a double-header on Whittier’s home field.

Starting pitcher Sonny Mott PI ’02 allowed four runs on eight hits and a base on balls. Whittier added runs in the sixth and the eigth. Pomona scored its sole run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Rob Ruiz, PI ’03.

On Saturday’s doubleheader, however, the Sagehens fared much better, winning both games in the tenth inning/

In the first game, Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-RBI double by third baseman Matt Rager ’02. They widened their lead to 5-0 in the fifth, behind a bases-loaded walk, a fielder’s choice and an error.

In the bottom of the eighth, Whittier scored their first run, and in the bottom of the ninth, they added four more to tie it up.

In the top of the tenth, Pomona-Pitzer immediately retook the lead. Rager broke the tie with an RBI triple that scored Jose Cortez PI ’03. Rager then scored on a single by Ollie Morrison ’02. Pomona-Pitzer scored their eighth run on a sacrifice fly.

Mike Renery ’03, who picked up the win for the Sagehens, pitched a scoreless bottom of the tenth.

Pomona-Pitzer once again rallied in the top of the tenth to win in the second game.

After a scoreless first two innings, Pomona-Pitzer got on the board in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Alan Flores PI ’03. Whittier, however, tied it in the bottom of the fourth.

In the top of the sixth, the Sagehens scored twice on a two-RBI single by Rager.

After Whittier pushed to within one run in the bottom of the eighth, Alex Siele ’02m homered to restore the Sagehens’ two-run lead.

But in the bottom of the ninth, Whittier rallied to tie the score.

Pomona-Pitzer responded in the top of the ninth, scoring four runs, two on a triple by Morrison, to take the lead and eventually win the game.
