KGI Problematic Beyond BFS

Editor:

Let me just preface this by saying that I have a lot of respect for people who are willing to chain themselves to things and get arrested for causes. I’m sure there are causes out there I’d get arrested for, but so far it’s only been for minor alcohol possession and "reckless endangerment." As for things I chain myself to, they all pretty much remain metaphorical.

All joking aside though folks, my concern here is that in focusing solely on the field station and not on Keck, these protesters are setting themselves up for a possible victory with the field station at the expense of getting Keck built somewhere else. And when it does get built someplace else, it will probably be as a part of a compromise with the field station people. Now, I might be way off base here in assuming that most people who care about the field station also care about Keck but I don’t think so, and to that end, it seems counterproductive to me for you guys to bracket off these two issues.

What the fuck is Keck, people? I mean, what the fuck is going on here? I don’t intend for this letter to be a laundry list of the problems I have with KGI, and it’s not going to be, but I’m getting pretty fed up with this bullshit, man. I think a lot of people are. In fact, I feel like more people would be sympathetic to anti-Keck civil disobedience than they are for the field station. Consequently, and to repeat myself, I think it’s a mistake to separate these two inextricably linked issues. Who knows, it might even become a cause I want to get arrested for.

Oh, and even though this is probably going to detract from my main point, it’s not the sixties anymore, people. Buy a clue. It’s 2001, which is a pretty fucking revolutionary sounding year in its own right. Can we please update the style so I don’t feel like a cheap imitation of my parents’ generation all the time? They’d respect us more for it too, believe you me.
