Claremont Colleges Men’s Ultimate Frisbee

Next Contest: Location TBA – April 7, 2001

Last Results: The eight games played in San Diego remain confidential to protect the players.

In the soberest tournament of the year, the Claremont Braineaters arguably played worse without their traditional pre-game drinking and smoking ritual.

Without Pomona juniors Dan Morgan and Zach Feldman, the team was unable to rally support for the peace pipe. Nonetheless, ten men bravely played ultimate frisbee Saturday in San Diego and seven stayed to play Sunday (seven play on the field at once). After 12 hours of game-time over two days, Claremont played eight teams (most of them outnumbering the Braineaters 3:1). They scored 69 to their opponents’ cumulative 94 (their actual record for the eight games is confidential).

Before a game against Las Positas College, the Claremont women’s team joined the Braineaters in a cheer of "huck, bid, pillage, and burn…eat the babies!" This cheer did little to help them win. Also in the highlight reel grab bag from President’s Day weekend was a Whit Scott Pasadena CC ’04 dive from atop the shoulders of Steve HMC ’04 in the end zone to catch a throw from Andre Verner ’02.

Much blood shed, no beer drank.

Claremont Colleges Women’s Ultimate Frisbee

Next Contest: Stanford — March 3-4, 2001

Last results: President’s Day Tournament, San Diego — February 17-18, 2001

This year’s Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team is bigger and more experienced than last year’s squad. With a roster of over 20 players, the team, in only its third year of existence, is stronger than ever.

The team traveled to San Diego over President’s Day Weekend for their second tournament of the season. Unfortunately, due to Parents’ Weekend, they took a big hit and only brought a squad of 12 players for Saturday and 8 players on Sunday.

The team went 1-3 on Saturday and 2-1 on Sunday. "It was really frustrating," says Shelley Kunasek ’01. "The only team we should have lost to was UCSD-A. We were really close in our games against Whitman, UCSC and Washington, and our lack of numbers really hurt us."

The team ended the weekend on the bright side with a win against Oregon State, whom they had already beat on Saturday. However, in this game, Oregon State pulled out some surprises. Oregon State had just come off their first win of the weekend and after a couple points, decided to play in only their skirts and cleats. Half-naked as the opposition was, Claremont was unfazed and scored all the "naked" points, finally winning the game 13-6.

The entire team played extraordinarily well despite their numbers. Leading in scoring were Kunasek with 22 assists and 12 scores, and Ellen Lin ’01 with 23 assists and 7 scores. Defensive standouts included Jenny von Reis, SC ’03, Laila Bernstein ’04 and Kat Ayres ’04.

Claremont Colleges Men’s Lacrosse

Next Contest: Saturday, March 3 @ Occidental

Last Results: Saturday, February 24 vs Saint Mary’s: LOSS (14-3)

The Men’s Lacrosse team looks to improve over last season’s second place finish to Saint Mary’s. This year Claremont has a new coach, Scott Rustulka. This gives them a great advantage over last year’s team that did not have a coach. Last year, Claremont finished with a 4-1 in their division and 6-6 overall.

Claremont was hit hard by graduation, but still returns Cody Thomas PI ’02 and John Shriver-Blake ’03. Thomas is a captain and defensive standout. He was named a 2000 Western Collegiate Lacrosse League (WCLL) All-Star. Shriver-Blake finished 18th in WCLL in scoring while averaging just over four goals and one assist per game.

After spring break, Claremont will also travel to Reno to play the University of Pacific and the University of Reno.

Claremont Colleges Women’s Rugby

Next Contest: Saturday, March 3 vs UCSB Lind Field, Harvey Mudd 1pm

Last Results: Saturday, February 17 vs Occidental: WIN

Saturday, February 24 @ Arizona State: LOSS

Saturday, February 25 @ Arizona: LOSS

The morning of the February 17 brought fear to the eyes of some ruggers, and hunger and anger to the eyes of others. Oxy had the fear. The Claremont Foxes were ready to play. They were ready to put the fear of God in their opponents and make them wish they were playing football so the sissies could wear protective padding. Claremont shoved the Occidental Tigers all over the field and scored five times. Backs Captain Emily Williams HMC ’01 scored twice, as well as giving Claremont three other points with a field goal and two extra points after a try. What a foot. Nicki Cole ’02, Kristin Conner ’01 and Ali Carrigan CMC ’02 also made tries. The final score was 30-5, and Oxy was forced to drag their wanna-be-Princeton-Tiger-tails all the way home. Before they left, however, they did manage to beat the Foxes at the drink-up. Wait, let me rephrase that. After having been given three Claremont students because they couldn’t even put up a line of six drinkers, Chris DeMento ’02 won the race for Occidental. Yay for them.

This last weekend saw the Claremont Foxes playing back-to-back games in Arizona. First came ASU in Phoenix on Saturday, when our ladies lost to the Sun Devils 28-5. Our try was made by scrumhalf Anne Gibson ’03. An excellent game, it was hands-down the fiercest game of rugby ever played by the Foxes. There were practically three fistfights, away from the ball, involving Siobhan O’Hara PI ’02, Nicki Cole ’02 and Tiffany Hall ’03. Enough biting, hair pulling, pinching, raking, stomping and such to really do a body good. It was a great game. The Foxes then drove to Tucson for a game versus the University of Arizona that Sunday. A ragged, momentarily coach-less bunch showed up with a total of one sub for the few people playing injured already. It took the team a little while to get warmed up and start playing some real rugby. Unfortunately, in the 13 minutes of warm-up time, some damage had already been done and the Foxes ended up losing the game. Two tries were scored, one by Williams, who also made an extra kick, and by O’Hara. The Foxes have a game this weekend at 1pm Saturday versus UCSB at Harvey Mudd. Be there or be square.

Pomona-Pitzer Women’s Club Volleyball

Next Context: Saturday, March 31 @ Cerritos College.

Last Results: Saturday, March 24 @ SCVB tournament (5-5)

Last Saturday, the women’s club volleyball team, the Killer V’s, participated in tournament sponsored by the Southern California Volleyball Association, hosted at Long Beach City College. Due to the unusually large turnout, instead of the normal best two out of three matches, only two games were played per match (regardless of the winner of either match) and games were played to 21 points rather than 30.

The Killer V’s played five teams including an alum team from UC-Riverside, the CMS club and The Beach of Long Beach City College. The women won their first match and then split the second match against CMS, winning the first game but losing the second. In their third match, the Killer V’s lost to UC-Riverside where they also had the opportunity to play against their own Pomona-Pitzer assistant volleyball coach, Joleen Small.

Overall, the team felt that they played well considering the lack of practice time they had together and they anticipate quick improvement. They had fun and felt it was a good experience. The team placed 3rd in their pool.

Pomona-Pitzer Men’s Volleyball

Next Contest: Saturday, March 3 @ Caltech

Last Result: Monday, February 26 win 3-2 against LACC 25-20, 25-14, 21-25, 32-34, 15-12

You’ve seen our Sagehen women play it when you’re busy skipping water polo games in the fall, and you might as well get up off your lazy ass and come watch us play it now. I have no intention of competing with the women’s squad for your attention; they deserve it. However, we have something that they do not. Tall gangly uncoordinated cats leaping aimlessly about. Texan Mike Chin being cut and hard, performing circus tricks. Pure, unadulterated, gorgeous Whipple. Bask in his grandeur. You’ve never seen anything like it. And you love it.

I know what you’re thinking. We’re club, dammit. Why should we have fans? However, that we are a club, my friends, is the very reason why we are special. We are permitted to dance. We may celebrate in any fashion we like. Big Woodlee Hunt can do the Worm. That’s nuts, I tell you. Nuts. We are powerful and in the primes of our lives and we play ball. A ball that starts with V.
