This years Valentines Day performance of The Vagina Monologues proved so popular that students allegedly printed counterfeit tickets to gain entrance to the 8 pm show.
"Over 30 people were turned away from the second show of the evening," explained Stage Manager Robin Starr 04,
A ticket audit following the show confirmed that tickets were not oversold, and there was no inconsistency in accounting.
Although the shows house manager Addison Raymond 02 explained that there were some discrepancies in ticket sales prior to the show, it turned out that The Vagina Monologues were actually undersold by about ten tickets.
According to Raymond, who had to prevent students denied admission from entering the theater through side doors, people wanting to borrow original tickets in order to copy them approached people with legitimate tickets before the shows.
The original tickets would have been easy to reproduce, said Raymond, because they were designed on Word and printed on card stock; someone could have matched the fonts and purchased identical card stock to create the counterfeit tickets.
The Vagina Monologues director Dru Hilty 02 apologized to those who were turned away. Hilty explained that the incident proved the power and popularity of The Vagina Monologues and added that there would be a screening of The Vagina Monologues video at a later date. Refunds for purchased tickets are not likely, however, according to Raymond, because the incident was not caused by overselling tickets.
The Vagina Monologues, a collection of monologues and ensemble pieces celebrating womanhood, started off-Broadway. The script to the show is now lent out to various schools and organizations to raise money for charity. The proceeds from Pomonas performances, which were estimated at around $3,000 according to Hilty, went to Project Sister and House of Ruth.
