Napster is Fun, Like Drugs, and Free

I’m writing in response to John Matson’s opinions piece from February 16. John, saying Napster’s not fun is like saying crack’s not fun. If you’re addicted, you’re addicted, and there really isn’t much you can do about it. I mean yeah, sure I’ve tried to cut back. I even went cold turkey for a few days one time. But the shakes, oh the shakes… To think of actually paying for music again just scares the hell out of me.

You talk about loving the feeling of going to buy music with your hard earned scrilla burning a hole in your pocket. You know what I love? Feeling that hard earned cash sitting in my wallet as I get my music fix from Napster. For freezy. While I have no doubt that, as you say, "every album in [your] collection has a story," so does every album in mine. I got all 800 of them from Napster. For freezy. I feel your pain about choosing the wrong albums on occasion as well. You know what I do when that happens? I get my double click on and delete them.

Anyway John, I would never, ever, ever defend the legality of Napster. In fact, my capitalist heart feels a twing of sadness every time I download another song, but for you to argue that Napster isn’t fun is simply besides the point. I need it. America needs it. We’re sick, all of us, and there’s no rehab for this drug.

Sincerely,

Sam Meites ’01
