Senators Should Use Their Votes

Voting members of the ASPC Senate this year are operating under some restrictions. They have agreed to a code under which if a senator can benefit from the outcome of a vote, that senator is not supposed to take part in the vote. This policy, imaginably instituted so that senators only enter into voting situations from what is a seemingly neutral position, is inappropriate for a college of Pomona’s small size, and harmful to the fate of the campus.

TSL Needs Journalistic Freedom

This past week a senator approached The Student Life, concerned that Senate, led by ASPC President Brian Andrews ’01, had been breaking its own constitution by conducting business during private meetings. While Andrews disputes whether or not either of these gatherings constituted a private meeting in violation of Senate bylaws, it is clear that both did.

Senate Must Participate in BFS Battle

By hesitating on KGI, the Senate affirms what we has sadly become a trend. Last spring I proposed to the Senate a resolution to support BFS during the KGI application process at City Hall. Despite knowledge of 400 letters of public comment (about 80 percent of which was against project approval), a 1000-page environment impact report that strongly opposed building without realising "significant unavoidable environmental impacts," and a fifteen page packet of background articles, the Senate told me that they felt "unprepared" and "too biased" to make a favourable decision, especially after receiving (pro KGI) counsel from administrator Neil Gerard. Gerard even attempted to raise false legal concerns if the Senate took such a position. It is truly unacceptable that our Senate refuses to take a forceful stand on ecological protection or biotechnological ethics. The majority of students at Pomona College do not support KGI or the destruction of BFS, and the Senate should reflect these views in their official positions.

America Acts Fairly in Middle East

Conor Friedersdorf’s editorial entitled "Biased U.S. Cannot Foster Mid-East Peace" is full of misinformation and misrepresentation. While I cannot address all of his arguments in this letter, I will try to address the most vexing ones.

Kasper Dislikes the The Student Life

I hesitantly offered to write for the sports section of The Student Life at the beginning of the semester. The hesitancy derived from my low opinion of the quality of the paper as a result of its poor content and writing style during my first semester on campus. I chose to write for the paper because I found it more important to attempt to actively change it, rather than to absently denigrate it.
