Taking One Step Forward, Two Steps Back
By Conor Gallogly
Sports Editor

They did not want to talk about it and for good reason. No one would want to spend a Friday night recounting how an 11 point lead evaporated over seven and a half minutes and turned into a five point loss. A second half collapse that stunned this writer must have seemed like a nightmare to the Pomona-Pitzer women’s basketball team, whose hopes of a SCIAC championship bounced on the sideline with ten seconds remaining against a resilient and scrappy Whittier team. How different did Pomona-Pitzer play at that game’s end than they did during their wonderful 77-74 victory against former conference leader Redlands? More

Golf Looks Towards Future, Freshmen
By Adam Goldwyn and Andrew Kasper
Sports Associate and Contributing Writer

Retired rich bastards in plaid pants and goofy hats, pimply-faced caddies dragging around their equipment, kissing their wrinkled old feet and begging for loose change…is this your image of golf? Well, this isn’t your grandma’s golf course. This is Division 3 Men’s Golf. This is Eastlake Country Club, home of the infamous Point Loma Invitational. It was upon this course that a small group of highly trained, no-shit-from-no-one Pomona Pitzer athletes decided to pitch their collective tent and await the looming confrontation. More

Swimmers’ Secrets Discovered: Gatorloding
By Janice Kang
Sports Editor

The Pomona-Pitzer women’s swim team is a force to be reckoned with. Fueled by the awesome boost of Gatorlode, these women swim not only to win, but also to impress. What is Gatorlode, you ask? It sounds like Gatorade and comes in a container similar to powder-form Gatorade, complete with the characteristic lightning bolt that symbolizes super energy. But the "lode" at the end of the product’s name makes all the difference. Three servings of this amazing liquid provides as many carbohydrates as two servings of pasta (linguini or rigatoni, red or white sauce, it doesn’t matter), one medium potato, and four slices of whole grain wheat bread- the kind that’s so dense you can feel it sitting like a brick in your stomach. But are three servings enough? More

Men’s Basketball Dominates Redlands, Seeks Cal-Lutheran
By Andrew Kasper
Contributing Writer

The Sagehen men’s basketball team placed heat upon SCIAC leader Cal Lutheran with a convincing 78-65 victory over Redlands. Pomona-Pitzer moved to 7-2 in conference play, only two games behind Cal Lutheran. Moreover, Pomona faces Cal Lutheran at home later in the season, granting the squad the opportunity to close on Cal Lutheran in the conference standings while avenging their earlier loss. More

Lady Luck, CMS, Foil P-P Women’s Tennis
By Adam Goldwyn
Sports Associate

The Pomona-Pitzer women’s tennis team marched south last weekend to test their mettle in the unfriendly confines of Cal Poly Pomona. Although hosted by Cal Poly, the tournament turned into the PP vs. CMS show. The eight PP women fought bravely and nobly for the greater glory of Sagehens worldwide. In the singles bracket, two Hens battled their way into the quarterfinals. Kelli Howard ’04 played two excellent matches before falling to Blair Rubenstein CMC ’01, who would go on to lose in the finals. In another part of the draw, Betsy Mork ’04 also advanced before falling to another member of the talented CMS squad. More

How Sport Should Be
By Conor Friedersdorf
Managing Editor

Like Bud Bowl and the instant replay before it, the premier of the XFL might revolutionize sports in America. Imagine: what if we made all of our sports needlessly dangerous and sensationalistic? Sports could compete with reality based television in prime time, and Jesse Ventura could become the next Bob Costas. Listen: your average American sports fan is sick and tired of athletes earning their inflated salaries by not sacrificing and exploiting the one commodity that they can sell their bodies. With that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of suggested changes for America’s sports leagues to consider if they wish to remain financially solvent. More
