Eatin' with Epi-Curious: Chili’s Grill & Bar

407 Auto Center Drive

Claremont, CA 91711

909-625-9244.

Chili’s is either an upscale fast-food restaurant or a moderately-priced restaurant chain, perhaps both. The local store is located on Indian Hill Boulevard, just south of the 10 freeway. There is a small bar area surrounded by a dining area, which is also small. As noted in their never-ending TV ads, they feature items like boneless buffalo wings, lettuce wraps, fajitas, burgers, ribs and their famous Awesome Blossom. FYI: it’s true, they’re Awesome!

Our recent visit was a dinner for four. Early arrival avoided the 30-40 minute wait that would occur later in the evening. We started with draft Newcastles and chardonnay and moved to ordering dinner. The foursome enjoyed two Ground Peppercorn Burgers ($5.99), Crispy Chicken Salad ($6.79) and a Plain Quesadilla ($4.29). (Our server informed us that they wouldn’t prepare the burger rare as requested. Mad Cow disease in Claremont? Moooo? Mooo? Moooo?) The food was served promptly and was well presented. The burgers, served with fries and Awesome Blossom strips, were tasty and moist, but missed the peppercorns and spices as advertised. The Crispy Chicken Salad, with a generous portion of chicken, was delicious and the quesadilla was as expected.

Chili’s is fun, close and serves good food. Consistent quality, reasonable prices and a good location make Chili’s a good bet for hungry Sagehens. While not haute cuisine, Chili’s is a good student-budget choice for dinner or a late-night snack. Chili’s earned two and a half chef’s hats for food and another two and a half for ambience.

Editor’s Note: Also, they have a mean happy hour from 4-6, and then from 9-11 every weekday. Free chips and salsa are better than Frary dinner, and three dollar margaritas are better than being concerned with your academic career, your emotional stability, and your sad, sad life.
