Student’s Drinks Spiked at A Capella Festivities

By Scott LaBoda
News Editor

A student was hospitalized late last Friday after he was served alcoholic drinks which were spiked with vodka at an on-campus party. A Campus Safety officer patrolling near Walker encountered the student around 1 am, determined he was sick from alcohol consumption, and called an ambulance. The party was held in Walker and hosted by the Men’s Blue and White, a 5C a capella group.

"[The student in question] consumed the equivalent of four drinks–two Mike’s hard lemonades with a shot of vodka added to each without his knowledge," stated Adam Teicholz ’01 and Addison Raymond ’02, two members of the group who were present at the party. There were, however, some conflicting reports regarding the amount of alcohol that was consumed.

The student, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that he had gone to a party with some friends and consumed two hard lemonades. He stated that the bottles of lemonade were sealed when he arrived, but that someone admitted to him later that the lemonade had been spiked and the bottles resealed. It is unclear who added vodka to the lemonade, but a source in a reliable position indicated that it was a "group idea."

That source, who declined to be named, indicated that the sick student was throwing up for awhile and not talking much before being taken to the hospital. The source speculated that the Campus Safety officer on the scene may have over-reacted by calling the hospital. The source said that a second officer, who arrived later, said that the student did not need to be hospitalized.

Several people were trying to help the sick student back to his dorm when Campus Safety arrived, according to another individual who spoke on condition of anonymity and admitted to having attended the party. That individual insisted on conferring with the student in question before confirming this report.

The student in question said that "some people at the party knew I didn’t drink," and he speculated that "it’s a possibility they might have put some extra alcohol in my drink." Although he admitted being suspicious about feeling buzzed after only one drink, the student apparently did not notice any difference..

One of the anonymous sources supported that statement, indicating that the group wanted to bring him up to their level of drunkenness, and that was why they spiked his drink.

Dean of Campus Life Matt Taylor confirmed that the party in Walker was an event held by and for the Men’s Blue and White, however he did not know whether or not the drink had been spiked.

"Both Dean Quinley and I will be talking to the Blue and White members about it," stated Taylor. As of yet, no judicial action has been taken and Dean Taylor said that there was no decision yet on whether the deans would pursue the issue with the Judiciary Board.
